On the January 14th agenda for the Harford County Board of Education is a public input session on the proposed operating budget for next year; recognition for an award-winning teacher, and a presentation on employee healthcare from the president of the teachers’ union.
The school board will hold a work session on the operating budget, including a public input session, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the A.A. Roberty Building in Bel Air. The work session will be followed by a board business meeting, which is set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
Work Session
The board work session will begin with recognition for Lauren Hunter, a winner of the 2012 Milken Educator Award. Ms. Hunter is a reading specialist at William Paca/Old Post Road Elementary School in Abingdon, and the only Maryland winner of the award for 2012. In addition to public recognition, Milken Educator Award winners each receive $25,000. The award is intended to highlight the importance of outstanding educators and encourage others to consider the teaching profession.
Next on the work session agenda, board members will hear public input on the operating budget proposed by Superintendent Robert Tomback for the fiscal year 2014. Tomback’s proposal includes a $442,872,460 unrestricted operating budget, which is an increase of $15.1 million, or 3.5%, over the current fiscal year. The increase is comprised of $6.3 million for salaries, $6.6 million for employee benefits and a $2.2 million increase in the cost of doing business.
Following the public input session, board members will discuss the proposed operating budget with Superintendent Tomback and his senior staff.
The school board may choose to amend Tomback’s proposal before adopting it as the board’s proposed budget in a vote expected by the end of the month. The next public hearing and work session on the schools’ budget is set for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16th at the A. A. Roberty Building in Bel Air. Business Meeting
Following the work session, board members will hold a board business meeting featuring a “Presentation on HCPS Healthcare” from Ryan Burbey, president of the Harford County Education Association (HCEA). HCEA represents county teachers in labor negotiations with the school board.
As always, the business meeting will include a public comment period for matters not limited to the proposed operating budget.
The meeting will conclude with a report from Superintendent Tomback.
