From the Maryland State Police:
(CONOWINGO, MD) – State and Natural Resources Police, joined by fire and rescue personnel, are continuing to search the Susquehanna River at the Conowingo Dam for a man whose car was found parked on the road over the dam last night.
The man, who is from Havre de Grace, Md., is not being identified at this time. Although he is missing, troopers are still working to confirm that he was driving the car when it was abandoned on the bridge.
Shortly before 7:00 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police at the North East Barrack received a call from a motorist traveling southbound on Rt. 1 over the Conowingo Dam, just south of Rt. 222, who reported a possible disabled vehicle stopped in the roadway. The vehicle had its hazard lights flashing.
A trooper was dispatched and upon arrival, he found the vehicle unoccupied, with the hazard lights flashing and the engine running. The vehicle was registered to a husband and wife in Havre de Grace. State Police contacted the Havre de Grace Police Department to request their assistance in contacting the vehicle owners. It was then learned that a Havre de Grace police officer was already at that home taking a missing person report from the wife, who said her husband was suicidal and had left a suicide note at their home.
The North East Barrack duty officer contacted the Cecil County Emergency Operations Center, Natural Resources Police, and the North East Barrack Criminal Investigation Section to respond to the scene at the Conowingo Dam for a possible suicide. Members of the Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company swift water rescue team, Delaware State Police helicopter “Trooper 4”, Natural Resources Police and North East Barrack criminal investigators conducted an extensive search of the area for the man, but were unable to locate him before darkness, weather conditions, and the rocky terrain ended their search until this morning. Officials have continued their search today, but have not yet located the man.
The investigation is continuing.
At the request of the individual’s family and for the sake of clarity: according to Maryland State Police, the statement in the above release that the person “was suicidal and had left a suicide note at their home” was not meant to imply that the person had exhibited signs of suicidal tendencies prior to the discovery of the note at his home.
