Churchville Elementary School Stuffs a Jeep for Those in Need

Churchville Elementary School stuffed a jeep full of items. The students, staff, parents and community members all joined together to collect items for those in need. While the school typically collects articles this time of year for the less fortunate in the county, the devastation caused by the arrival of Hurricane Sandy created a larger need to our north. Through connections of staff and parents to friends and family in these areas, Churchville learned of schools that lost many of the supplies that are needed daily to help students learn.

The student council working in conjunction with the Parent Teacher Administration (PTA) and school administration decided to collect for all those in need and reach out to these other schools. The school community collected nonperishable food items; school supplies; gently used toys and books; and new hats, mittens and gloves.

On December 4, a shiny new Jeep graciously donated by Adams Jeep of Maryland for this exciting event, arrived at school. Then the stuffing began. Classes of students brought their items out and put them in the Jeep. It wasn’t long until the doors had to be shut so items wouldn’t fall out. A little later, a ladder was needed to put articles into the four-door vehicle through the open roof. By 2:00 p.m., every donated item, down to the last pencil and eraser, had been stuffed in the Jeep. Then it was time for members of the student council to unpack and sort. With the assistance of members of the PTA and staff, the items were taken out of the Jeep, sorted and put in the school for pick up.

All the nonperishable food items were donated to the Harford County Food Bank. The school supplies, books, toys, hats, mittens and gloves were divided between Copiague School District in New York and Union Beach Elementary School in New Jersey. These items were delivered by members of the Churchville school community the following week.
