From Harford County Public Schools:
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the fifth grade students at Hickory Elementary School decided to reach out to one of the hardest-hit areas – New Jersey – to offer assistance. In doing so, they learned of Wallace Elementary School in Hoboken, New Jersey. While studying natural disasters, Hurricane Sandy provided a real-world connection for the students.
They integrated this content into their writing curriculum and launched a two-week campaign to raise funds for Wallace Elementary School to replace some of the supplies that were lost during the storm. The fifth grade team raised $1,100. The teachers, Mrs. Wolcott, Mrs. Edwards, Mr. Schmucker and Mrs. Walker, and special educator Amy Vaughan-Roland, drove to Hoboken, New Jersey, to present the check to the principal, Mr. Medlin.
