From the office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal:
A joint investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Maryland State Police is currently underway at the scene of a one alarm fatal fire at 1417 Charlestown Drive in Edgewood that took the life of a 5 year-old boy.
The 6:25 p.m. one alarm fire was contained to the basement of the two-story wood frame, center unit townhouse by first arriving firefighters. Approximately 45 firefighters from Joppa, Abingdon, Aberdeen, Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Kingsville Volunteer Fire Departments controlled the blaze within 25 minutes. The home was occupied at the time by the boy, his father and 2 year-old sister. The father escaped with his 2 year-old daughter, but was not able to save his 5 year-old son.
Investigators have determined the fire originated in the basement of the home. The cause for the fire remains under investigation at this time. Working smoke alarms were operating at the time of the fire. The victim will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. The investigation continues at this time.
