From the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County:
Bel Air, Maryland – The Boys & Girls Clubs are getting ready for their annual Bike Rodeo, which will take place at the Day for Kids celebration. This year’s National Day for Kids Celebration will take place on Sunday, September 16 from 10:00am-1:00pm in the parking lot of the Bel Air MVA, right next to the Bel Air Boys & Girls Club.
This will be a fun day for families that includes: games, face painting, moon bounces, free food, and, of course, a BIKE RODEO! The bike rodeo consists of a bicycle safety course, bike drag races, and bike jousting. All bike riders are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of $12 each that will go to support Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County.
Day for Kids is a nationwide event set aside each year to honor America’s children. We encourage Club parents and community members to make a commitment to connect with the young person in their life and spend meaningful time together engaging in active play. By having fun playing together, you will be creating memories that will last a lifetime. Active play is a vital part of developing a young person’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being. Also, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play offers an ideal opportunity for parents to engage fully with their children.
Research shows that when adults spend meaningful time with kids, it helps kids develop a positive self-image and a sense of belonging, usefulness and purpose. The Families and Work Institute’s study, “Ask the Children,” found that while children are happy with the amount of time their parents spend with them, they wish the time together was not rushed, but focused and rich in shared activities.
The kids at the Bel Air Club are hard at work designing sets for the bicycle safety course, and practicing their rodeo skills for the big day. They would like to thank the United Way Day of Action volunteers for helping with set design and preparation. Day for Kids will be a fun, exciting day to for the whole family—but mostly, it will be a day to appreciate and celebrate kids.
