The U.S. Department of Defense is threating to prosecute a former Navy SEAL for disclosing classified information about the Osama Bin Laden raid. Get the inside story on gag orders and government secrets from author W. Craig Reed, our guest this week on “The Harford Edge.”
A former submariner and Navy diver, Reed operated with SEAL teams and interviewed former SEALs for his bestselling book, Red November: Inside the U.S. – Soviet Submarine War. Find out why Reed thinks the latest threats from DOD are “hollow” and hear about his new novel, The Eagle and the Snake, Friday, September 7th on WAMD Radio 970 AM.
Also on “The Harford Edge”, we’ll talk about “Maryland Watch”, a new political feature on The Dagger. Plus we’ll have the news of the week, including a hit and run case in Forest Hill and a profile on the new president of the Harford County teachers’ union. As always, we’ll also give you the 411 on community events to enjoy in and around the county.

Let me get this straight if I have a security clearance and in violation of that and a non-disclosure agreement I share it all to make money that should be OK? Some would call that treason!

There is disclosure of classified information with regard to technology, tactics, and capabilities, and then there is disclosure that would cause embarrassment to the United States Government. The authot has to be taken to trial and his intent and what he disclosed has to be demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt, at least if he is no longer under the UCMJ. Certainly the revelation that Bin Laden was mortally wounded as soon as he peaked around the door, and then later shot multiple times while he was on the floor, dying, was a different story than what we had been told previously. I don’t believe they were obligated to bring him back alive.

As I understand it since his actions occured in uniform and the non-disclosure form indicated he would be held under the UCMJ even after he left the service. Beside since he has written a book it is clear that anything in the book and in the notes for the book he gave the potential publishers (and any ghost writters) was obviously disclosed. It also seems the SEAL charity wont take his money. He can not claim he accidently disclosed it since it was clearly deliberate. My point is this is not censorship. He waived his right to such things when he put on the uniform and went on this mission.
