From Maryland State Police, Bel Air Barrack:
(ABERDEEN, MD) – On Sunday, May 20, 2012 at approximately 4:45 p.m. troopers responded to U.S. Route 40 (Pulaski Highway) and Robinhood Road, Aberdeen, Maryland, for a serious motor vehicle crash.
Preliminarily investigation revealed that a 2000 Ford Explorer (operated by Shawn Marcel Christy, 28 yoa, 700 block of Otsego Street, Havre De Grace, Maryland) was traveling eastbound on Route 40. Upon approaching Robinhood Road the operator lost control of the Ford Explorer, crossed the median of Route 40, and then struck a 2004 Ford Expedition (operated by Margaret Ann Hockenberry, 54 yoa, 500 block of Congress Avenue, Havre De Grace, Maryland).
The Ford Expedition was previously traveling westbound on Route 40. After colliding with the Ford Expedition, the Ford Explorer rolled and the operator Christy was ejected.
Christy was transported to Harford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Christy’s five (5) year old son (Shawn Marcel Christy Jr.) was a rear passenger in the Ford Explorer at the time of the collision. He was transported to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and is currently in stable condition. Christy Jr. was properly secured by a child safety seat when the crash occurred.
The operator of the Ford Expedition (Margaret Hockenberry); her right front passenger (Scott Santford Hockenberry 3rd, 57 yoa, same address); the rear seat passenger (Rhys Nolan Hockenberry, 14 yoa, same address), all sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Scott Hockenberry was treated at Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. Rhys Hockenberry was transported to Upper Chesapeake Hospital.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash. Route 40 remained closed for several hours while the scene was investigated.

Very tragic, this death could have been prevented WEAR YOUR DAMN SEATBELT!

So SAD:( For the poster commenting about no seat belt being worn..You know this how?I do not remember seeing anything about this posted?

I was at the scene, no seatbelt worn. I agree preventable.

Tell-tale sign of no seatbelt: “…the Ford Explorer rolled and the operator was ejected.”

Ford explorers of that age were notorious for flipping . . . . Just saying.

Rest in peace. There is,however, more to this story.

First off r.i.p shawn, may God hold you close and your family closer. Now, the seatbelt issue. Not a single one of you were in the car with him so you don’t know why it wasn’t on. He could have taken it off for a split second for any number of reasons. A family lost a father, a son, a brother. A community lost a dear friend. How about you keep your judgmental comments to yourself. Didn’t your momma teach you if you don’t have anything nice to say keep your mouth shut. Thanks…..
Humber says
It doesnt matter why it wasnt on, IT WASNT ON. Willing to bet he was also under the influence.
Why says
Willing to bet you dont know what your talking about.
lady says
You have no idea what happened or what he was doing!! He was just out to lunch with his son and there was no alcohol where he was eating. He wouldn’t drink and drive with his son in the car. Please keep your comments to yourself. “Again if you have nothing nice to say don’t say it at all.”
Tifanie says
Arrangements are complete for Shawn and are as follows: viewing Saturday May 26 from 10-12 at Word of Faith International Outreach 1301 Loflin Rd. Aberdeen,MD followed by the funeral at 12noon. Internment will be held at St James United Cemetary on Grace View Dr in Havre de Grace
Tifanie says
For those of you with the negative comments my nephew was not under the influence. I’d appreciate if don’t have anything nice to say Stfu how ignorant can you be? He was a great nephew, son, father, & friend and is greatly missed!
poster says
No but your nephew did have a suspended drivers license. He should not have even been on the road. Its a shame when people drive without a valid license and end up hurting people.
David A. Porter says
A father is gone forevery. Certainly he should not have been on the road. But he is dead and the little boy that was riding with him lost his dad. I know another person who refuses to stop driving on her suspended license. She has done some terrible things to hurt other people. And still if she were to be hurt or killed because of her carelessness, four children will be adversely affected by her loss. And I will mourn her as well.
sally Johnson says
That DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. He KILLED SOMEONE. Thank god it was himself and not the other family. I have no pitty for people who break the law like this.
Mary Hawley says
Sally – No one asked for your pity. No one asked for your respect or compassion either, but I believe the situation certainly warrants it. HOw cold and devoid are you that you could put something in print like this for his family to read? Would you appreciate talk like this about your loved one in this situation? God have some compassion and stop it.
Mike Welsh says
While the four children you speak of may be affected by the loss of their mother, I do not believe they would be adversely affected, unless it would mean that they would then be with their fathers!!
Mary Hawley says
Thank you Tifanie both for the information about Shawn’s viewing and funeral, but especially for shutting up the negativity. The fools speaking this trash are just showing their ignorance and low class. They are also showing they certainly didn’t know Shawn. He was a great dad and would never intentionally jeopardize his son. Geesh!!!!
John Hawley says
One of my friends just ran into shawn before this happened and no he was not under the influence…where did you come up with that assumption, how you’re an emt so you must know everything…Lets tell the world I am an EMT blah blah blah no one cares. And it could have been prevented, I’m sorry are we fortune tellers with crystal balls that would know what would have happened had his seat belt been on. I want to become an EMT, but its douche-bags like you that keep me away, tooting their horn every second they get, thank god you’re here to tell us what could have been prevented (Maybe)captain hindsight. Ive seen people thrown out of cars with seat belts on, and people die because they were wearing their seat belt. We just do not know. Also If you did not know Shawn, what business do you have writing on this blog. You all probably sit here all day waiting for negative things to happen to other people just so you can throw your 2 cents in… My where would the world be without people like you…oh that’s right, better…just Say your peace and get out… Shawn was a great friend and ill never forget him… Thanks for the memories bud, hopefully see ya on the other side!

It’s not a Dagger article. It’s a Maryland State Police press release. These are often vague for a number of reasons. Don’t blame the Dagger for the content.

I’m very sorry for your loss Mrs. Tiffanie. God is going to give your family peace, continue trusting in Him.
To those who are being disrespectful – I pray God has mercy on you. It could’ve been any of us. Watch the words you speak because WORDS have power & can turn on you. RIP SHAWN
Kenny Reynolds says
Hey EMT, if your gonna talk ignorant shit, put your name on here so people can see who you are, or do you not have the balls?!?!? A family has lost their son, a little boy has lost his father. You have NO business posting your shallow comments. I didn’t know Shawn as well as my wife and her friends did, but I knew him enough to call him a friend. He would NEVER have put his son, or anyone else in harms way on purpose. He was a good man (Something I doubt you are or know anything about), a wonderful father (Insert previous comment here) and good friend. He will be missed, loved, and NEVER forgotten. You, on the other hand, will be forgotten like dog shit on my shoe. To Shawn’s family, please accept my heart felt condolences and my apologies for my rant, but Shawn is gone, and does not deserve to be talked about negatively here, or anywhere else but shallow, ignorant, hurtful people whose lives are so trivial and meaningless, that they have to hurt others to make themselves feel better. May God be with you always. Kenny Reynolds
Smith says
He did put his kids life in danger by driving without a seatbelt and driving without a valid license. Its sad that he is gone. But all of this could have been prevented. The woman who willingly let him use her car knowing that he was an unlicensed driver has blood on her hands.
Randy Arnold says
Life can be short. And you never know what can happen. That’s why they call them accidents. It can happen to me or you license or no license. Nobody is perfect and everybody makes mistakes. I didn’t know Shawn but I know life is tough for every single one of us. So before anyone starts judging anyone else look in the mirror and you will see someone who has had ups and downs, triumphs, joy and pain, good times and bad. And we all are going to go somehow. So don’t put down people you don’t know because someone who doesn’t know you could put you or your family down and you wouldn’t like it. I have lost family and it’s very painful. Think about it..I did. So good luck to his family and friends. Life goes on even with pain.
Lance says
Hey EMT I do believe that is a HIPAA violation and It wouldn’t take much to make a phone call and end your EMT career.
Grounder says
Its sad. All you want to do is demonize a guy who points out the truth. What a turd you are.
Paul Mc says
Hey Lance,
“Hey EMT I do believe that is a HIPAA violation and It wouldn’t take much to make a phone call and end your EMT career.” – What did EMT say that violated HIPAA? Unless a post was deleted or something, all EMT said was “I was at the scene, no seatbelt worn. I agree preventable.” What part of that violates HIPAA?
Anyways, have a nice day.
lance says
From what I remember any info given from a responder on the scene of an accident or any other call no matter how small the comment before the investigation is done and posted for public records is a hippa violation. Not to mention it is a little unprofessional. Also all these negative comments are unbelievable. I knew Shawn and he would not have put his son in danger. I can guarantee he was not under the influence. Imagine if this was a close family member or friend of yours these comments would anger and upset you . So to all the people that are disrespectful I hope something like this happens to you and you suffer as his family is doing now. Jerks
Paul Mc says
Hey Lance,
“From what I remember any info given from a responder on the scene of an accident or any other call no matter how small the comment before the investigation is done and posted for public records is a hippa violation.” – Actually, no. HIPAA protects personal and medical information; not a statement regarding the wearing of a seat belt nor an opinion that the wearing of a seat belt would have prevented the injury. What EMT stated was not a HIPAA violation.
“Not to mention it is a little unprofessional.” – Maybe a little unprofessional, but not a HIPAA violation.
“Also all these negative comments are unbelievable.” – You would expect people on an internet forum to not post negative comments about something like this? Really? Seriously?
“I knew Shawn and he would not have put his son in danger.” – He put himself in danger by apparently not wearing a seat belt; which, in essence, puts his son in danger.
“I can guarantee he was not under the influence.” – I hope not.
“Imagine if this was a close family member or friend of yours these comments would anger and upset you .” – Some would, some wouldn’t.
“So to all the people that are disrespectful I hope something like this happens to you and you suffer as his family is doing now. Jerks” – Wow, wishing death, pain, and suffering upon others. How very mature and respectful of you. You are a fine example for your friend’s child.
Anyways, have a nice day.
Poster says
If Lance was such a “good friend” and could parentage that he was not under the influence. He should have insisted that he not drive without a valid license. What a terrible friend you were Lance. You allowed him to drive without a license, and you did not insist he wear a seatbelt while driving Illegally. I blame you for his death if he was such a close friend and all.
Kristin says
Here’s the thing….regardless of him wearing a seat belt, or driving on a suspending license, Shawn was an amazing person, and you don’t get to take that away from him because you feel the need to be a asshole. It was an accident, that doesn’t mean he was drunk, or high, that also doesn’t mean that you get to bash him. He was loved by many and will be missed by everyone who knew him. All I know is, you’d consider yourself lucky to have known him, and I feel sorry for you that you didn’t. Rest in peace Shawn, I know there are a hell of a lot of people who wish you were still here.

you ppl are so disrespect full.shawn was a great freind and the best dad in the world.look just because his lisence was suspened doesnt mke him a bad psrson for what happened.plusr a seat belt can break.so please keep all the bad comments to yourself….r.i.p.my dear freind…….
Jesse says
having a suspended licenses does not make you a bad person. But driving anyway, with no seatbelt, and your kid in the car does.

I really think its a shame how ppl can get on here and talk so bad about someone u obviously didnt know…he was a great person, father and friend jst lke everyone else said if u dnt have nothin nice to say dnt say anything..no one knows why it happened or what caused him to loose control of the vehicle but him n the ppl that actually saw what happened….u always hear so many different stories but thats the thing its hear say unless u know exactly what happen then shut up and keep ur comments to ur self… i highly highly doubt he would be under the influence with his child in the car and as long as i knew shawn he wouldnt drink n drive someone was always with him to drive him hme as far as the license issue there are sooooo many ppl out here that drive with no license so ur telling me if they got in an accident the deserve that? lke thats bs…ppl really need to get it together n let the ppl that knew him n his family greive without this negativity!!

Sorry for you alls loss, but I all ready know how people can judge the victims the way they do, I loss my son JARRETT ANTHONY VAUGHAN(GARFIELD) in 2009 from a habititual drunk driver who ran my son down on Rt40 and left him there. So just because he was out late and going to see his friends and had a Tatoo of his dance group and his mothers name tatooed on his arm that he was a GANG MEMBER. His family made it seem like it was his fault and put it on the web too.Police ProbeFatal Hit And Run crash Aberdeen Topics. They were saying the cruelist things like KOONS need to be hung all that. I Know my son more than anyone he would not hurt a fly. But All im saying is they can say what they want but nobody but friends and family no the real Shawn. Just pray that those negative people find god and pray not to go straight to Hell!Amen!

I am here to tell everyone with their opions about wearing seatbelt or not. My husband and I lost a wonderful young man at age 17 to a car accident. He was the driver and was wearing his seatbelt and the passenger wasn’t and survived .the only thing that matters is that Shawn did not make it and that is the only thing that matters. Leave him at peace and his loved ones because the lose of any loved one is devastating and more so when it is your child and they go before you do. God Bless you Shawn and your loved ones
Question says
So what caused the truck to flip over and land on the other side of the road? The stretch he was on is a straight away.
Good Question says
I have heard several of his friends and former green turtle co-wokers discussing this. Several had said that he was involved in some sort of incident at a WA WA and that he may have been shot. He was fired from the Green Turtle for being involved in a large brawl in the parking lot.
Question says
Wow that is crazy. I figured there was something else then just losing control of the truck. To be such a good person he seemed to be in the middle of a lot.
