From Maryland State Police:
The Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack wants to remind everyone that buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a motor vehicle collision. Troopers will continue to be out in force for the remainder of May and during the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, searching for traffic violators, especially those who choose not to wear seatbelts and those who elect to drive while under the influence.
Don’t become a statistic. Be aware that already this month troopers have stopped over 800 vehicles for traffic offenses such as speeding, distracted driving, and occupant protection violations. Remarkably, out of these traffic stops there were 266 seatbelt citations and 4 child restraint citations issued. So far this month troopers have made 11 DUI arrests and 10 narcotics arrests.
The Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge Program has designated the month of May for the “Click it or Ticket” operation, and troopers from the Maryland State Police, Bel Air Barrack, will be targeting occupant protection violations. Additional operations will continue throughout the year, to include “High Visibility DUI Saturation Patrols” at the end of this month. Results of these operations, to include the identities of arrestees, will be posted.
Allied agencies will be participating in these operations.

“Click it or ticket” might as well be deemed “harass you then tax you”. It’s too bad MSP thinks it’s more important to dedicate 6 troopers to the weekly seat belt sting in Hickory than it is to get the problems in Edgewood straightened out. Then again , maybe seat belt stings are just more profitable……

This program is state-wide involving a lot of agencies. Raising awarenes and saving lives is what is is all about. More lives are lost especially by young males when seatbelts are not used. See the National Highway web site for more information.

Well if you had your seat belt on you would not have been pulled over… Put on your big boy pants and stop crying because your got a $25 seat belt ticket its not the Troopers fault its YOUR fault.

Tickets…..Unless you are a Police Officer. This law is a Joke unless it applies to everyone ! How many times has a Police car passed you and the Cop driving does Not have their seatbelt on or is talking on a cell phone?
Sheeple says
The police are exempt from the hands free cell phone law. It’s just for us serfs.
Paul Mc says
It does not apply to law enforcement or emergency personnel when acting within scope of official duty.
ALEX R says
Actually, speeding (but not to an emergency) and not wearing a seat belt and talking on their cell phone. All at the same time.
Let’s not forget the seat belt law is an example of the ‘this will never become a primary offense violation’ which is how they sold the seat belt law to get it passed. That would be the same ‘talking on your hand held cell phone will always be a secondary offense’ that they told us when they passed that law. Just wait.
Of course some of the fools I see trying to drive and talk on their hand held cell phone at the same time should be pulled over, slapped silly and then have either their cell phone or license taken away.
Actually, isn’t Edgewood primarily the responsibility of HCSO?
jtownejeff says
yes, the crime in edgewood (and everywhere else in the county) is HCSO territory first, though the MSP is there for back up. the troopers seem to have been relegated to traffic patrol across the state.

The states really didn’t have much option when it came to seat belt, child safety seat, and alcohol enforcement legislation. The feds mandated that states follow federal policies if they wanted to continue receiving federal highway funds.
