As the leading advocate for homeownership and housing issues, the Harford County Association of REALTORS® joined the National Association of Realtors® in honoring Fair Housing Month this April and received a proclamation from the Harford County Council declaring April Fair Housing Month.
Carole Milan, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunity Committee led the association Fair Housing Poster Contest among the local students in grades K – 8. From the many submitted entries, three student’s posters are recognized and submitted to the Maryland Association of REALTORS® as entries in the state Fair Housing Calendar contest.
The three poster winners from Harford County schools are Ashlee Gilpin and Megan Despres and Spencer Comitz. A reception was also hosted at HCAR office for every student who submitted an entry and their parents. Local businesses, provided gift cards, pizza and refreshments and all the poster entries were displayed in the association lobby during the month of April.
The poster from Megan Despres was selected to be printed in the 2013 calendar from the Maryland Association of REALTORS®.
This year marks the 44th anniversary of the 1968 landmark Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or handicap. NAR also supports equal opportunity on the basis of sexual orientation, incorporating that support into the Realtor® Code of Ethics.
“Realtors® embrace our country’s racial and ethnic diversity and strive every day to make the benefits of homeownership accessible to everyone,” said NAR President Moe Veissi.
