The Harford County Board of Education will hear a presentation on next year’s proposed budget at a special board business meeting planned for April 4, 2012. The school budget will be discussed in light of the Harford County operating and capital budgets proposed late last week by County Executive David Craig.
For the fiscal year 2013, Craig proposed $214,291,627 in operating funding for Harford County Public Schools, unchanged from the current fiscal year, and approximately $24 million less than the amount requested by the school board. School operations are paid for by a combination of county and state funding.
Below is the published April 4th meeting agenda for the Harford County Board of Education. The meeting is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. in the A.A. Roberty Building in Bel Air. The public comment period is planned for 6:05 p.m. Please note that published agendas are subject to change:

Cindy Mumby says
Thank you. Here is the official word from HCPS:
Board of Education members have requested additional time to review the County Executive’s budget, therefore the Special Board Business meeting that was to be held this evening at 6:00 p.m. has been CANCELLED. Instead, on the advice of Counsel, the Board will now hold a closed session to discuss legal matters. As always, the topic of the closed session is pending Board approval at 6:00 p.m.
Enough says
We cannot have another frozen year… Everything is up… Gas, electric, food, etc. and both the board and county have surpluses… Time for a raise
Billy Jack says
You will, and you must, have another frozen year. Just as the rest of us in the work force have done. And, if you are the committed professionals you claim to be, you will work to educate our children as you have been hired to do.
We value you and respect the importance of what you do every day, but you will no longer hold that over our heads as tax payers. You may either choose to do the job you were hired to do or leave. Understand that we have had enough.
Ryan Burbey says
Billy Jack, Your post is not substantiated by fact.
“Harford County is one of top 25 counties in the nation in employment and wage gains, according to a new federal Bureau of Labor Statistics report.
During Wednesday’s Economic Development Advisory Board meeting in Aberdeen, county Economic Development Director Jim Richardson said Harford County was the third fastest county in the U.S., and first in the state, in over-the-year wage growth, increasing 8.8 percent from the second quarter of 2010 to second quarter 2011.
The average weekly wage in Harford County in the second quarter of 2011 was $890.”
frankly speaking says
@Billy Jack-Nice to know that you feel the pain too, but will you support raises if it doesn’t cost you any more $$$ than you already pay? If not, then why? Will you support a raise once the economy gets better? how come people are so against people getting a raise but seem to have no problem the county having millions in reserve and currently running a surplus? How about the expenditures in capital projects which run into the hundreds of millions year after year? Is taking care of its human resource assets not important or less important that buildings? When you need the county’s services being water and sewer, planning and zoning, housing counseling, permits, transportation or recreation centers, teachers, deputies or emergency services don’t you need an employee to actually answer the phone or service your needs?
Not true says
@billy. They do not have to make the choice you do rudely laid out for them. They can in fact stop doing all of tge free extra things such as tutoring, clubs, extra time planning, extra Rmtime grading, and so on. Explain how every other county has managed to uphold their end of the contracts but not ours? Also please explain how it is ok to give a teacher transferring into the county after working 8 years in Balt county their ninth step while a dedicated teacher who has given 9 years to “our” kids will remain on their fifth? Take care of outsiders but not those who make HCPS the best… Sad but not as sad as how parents like you care so little about your kids teachers
Ryan Burbey says
They won’t be getting anyone from Baltimore County. Baltimore County got all the lost steps returned. Sadly, They also underfund the schools’ capital budget and programing.
