“The Search for the U.S.S. Scorpion”

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), the US Navy, and Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) are currently searching for the USS Scorpion in the Patuxent River. Past underwater archaeology surveys revealed a War of 1812 wreck in these waters, but not enough evidence was gathered to identify her as Commodore Joshua Barney’s flagship. Join us and learn more about this fascinating investigation!

“Art that benefits the Bay”
A new temporary exhibit

The art on display was designed and executed with the intent of bringing awareness of the Bay heritage or raising funds for environmental purposes. In some cases the art was commissioned specifically to illustrate the bounty the Chesapeake has to offer. In other cases the art was done to help raise contributions for charitable purposes, many of which help clean the Bay and restore habitat for waterfowl and other species. There is also art that either won or was an entry in a conservation stamp competition. The funds raised by these stamps help purchase and restore habitat, or are used to protect, stock, and reintroduce native species. Finally there is art here to make people aware of the heritage of the Chesapeake Bay. Its purpose is to remind us of our responsibility to restore and maintain the health of this marvelous estuary.

Chris White has an AA degree from Luzerne County College and a BFA degree with Honors from the Maryland Institute, College of Art. He has won Conservation Stamp competitions both in and out of state. His work has been displayed in galleries and art shows around the Chesapeake Bay region. His art has been commissioned by museums and non-profit organizations for the purpose of raising funds and awareness. While maintaining a steady freelance career, Chris still works full time as a civilian for the United States Army Aberdeen Test Center. He and his wife, Janice, reside in Port Deposit.

“Art that benefits the Bay” will be on display until June.
