A pedestrian on the railroad tracks in Havre de Grace was struck and killed by an Amtrak train early Friday morning, police said.
At approximately 12:35 a.m., Havre de Grace police, members of the Susquehanna Hose Company, and the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps responded to a report of an individual struck by an Amtrak train in the area of Post Road. Authorities found a deceased victim on the railroad tracks at the end of the 400 block of Webb Lane, according to Havre de Grace Police Department spokesman Jeff Gilpin. No other victims were found.
According to Amtrak, the train involved was en route from Boston to Washington, D.C. when it struck the pedestrian at 12:24 a.m. No injuries to the train’s crew or approximately 90 passengers on board were reported. The train stopped following the incident, and was back on the move at 2:52 a.m.
The identity of the victim was not immediately available, an Amtrak spokeswoman said.

I never understood this..how do u get hit by a train? it’s not like they come out of nowhere or cant be approaching? i just dont get it.
Mike says
Ever been near the Acela when it goes by? Between stations and before grade crossings, these trains travel at 125 mph. If you trespass and look down the tracks at the headlight you have no prospective of the speed of the train as it approaches. Your point of view is straight on. At an angle, say from 25 yards away, you will get a reasonable idea of just how fast that train is moving. If you are close to the tracks you could literally be sucked in by the displacement of air. You wouldn’t walk on the shoulder of I-95 would you?

Usually drunks, but other accidents do happen. I had a college professor who was missing an arm because he was standing on the tracks photographing a station, he saw the train approaching but he thought it was on the tracks next to the one he was standing on.

Pissed with the government says
No body thinks of the real victims in this; the engineer and anyone else in the operating cab if the lead unit who were unable to prevent killing this trespasser. You don’t know how many hundreds if conductors engineers trainmen and other assorted railroad personell who suffer from PTSD because of the unfortunate actions of others.

agree 100%…pity the victim…but the horrors of the event will live on in the memory of the innocent folks who were helpless to avoid the accident…

Mrs. Observer and I have been thinking the same thing: This incident, while tremendously unfortunate, will probably renew calls for Amtrak (and also CSX) to put up fencing along the hundreds if not thousands of miles of rails. Especially coupled with the incident a while ago where a young girl was killed by a train — after cutting through a hole in a fence to cross a track — the question comes to mind: What part of “NO TRESPASSING” do people not get? It is an unfortunate reality that people make incredibly dumb decisions; and we can’t be protected from the consequences of all of them. I’ve seen posters on a lot of walls in a lot of places lately asking “What would you do if you knew you would not fail?” The unfortunate truth is that there are many, many decisions we can make where we will fail, sometimes (as in these cases) catastrophically. It’s life: We can’t be protected from everything, especially from our own stupidity.

I am sorry for your loss. I hope your family finds peace soon.
However, I don’t think Observer was making any comment directly about the victim here, and if not, I don’t think that comment was inappropriate. Rather, the post was about a really critical and useful question our society should probably be addressing and discussing. This incident, the article, and this forum provides one possible way to initiate that conversation. This is how I understood the post.
Sometimes certain news events and incidents set off thoughts in our heads that are really useful, valuable, or legitimate insights or questions, and The Dagger’s comment function provides a way for people to have those conversations— as distinct parts of an issue mostly unrelated to the event that triggered it.
Perhaps it is unfortunate, and perhaps it would be ideal if this site was able to divorce the comment threads from the articles in some way.
But that’s how I understood the post. If it was not intended that way, I cannot defend it.

Melanie…
My sincere condolences go out to you and your family for the loss of your sister…
I can never understand the comments some people feel they need to put out on a public forum during sad situations such as fatal car accidents or situations such as this. If the shoe were on the other foot and it was their family member who died, they would be outraged if someone made a cold or callus comment about their loved one…
Thats what makes our country so great. Even the ignorant and feeble minded have the right to make comments no matter how shallow or hurtful.

Dear Melanie,
I lived down the block from where Tammy used to live, and our boys went to the same school. I am sure you remember us from the birthday parties. I cannot find the words to tell you how terribly sad we all feel since we heard this news only yesterday, March 18th. What a terrible tragedy. My condolences to her boys, your mom and the whole family. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. I will say a prayer and light a candle for her. RIp Tammy <3
