A 71-year-old woman was hospitalized after police said she fell asleep at the wheel of her vehicle and struck a utility pole on Carrs Mill Road Thursday evening.
According to the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, crash occurred just after 6:40 p.m. on Carrs Mill Road at Ryan Road, near Winters Run.
A preliminary investigation found that the 71-year-old woman appeared to have fallen asleep at the wheel, according to Harford County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Monica Worrell. Her vehicle appeared to have overturned multiple times and struck a utility pole, downing electric and communication lines, according to the fire and EMS association.
The woman was extricated from her vehicle by members of the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company and was transported by helicopter to the University of Maryland R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment of her injuries. Worrell said the woman was alive and conscious and was flown out for precautionary reasons.
An investigation into the crash is continuing. Authorities expected that Carrs Mill Road between Vale Road and Ryan Road would be closed for an extended period of time while utility crews perform repair work.
