On the agenda for the December 12 meeting of the Harford County Board of Education are recognitions for fall athletes, approval of several contract awards, a presentation on partial voting rights for the student representative to the school board and a presentation of statistics relating to post-secondary education.
Student athletes from the 2011 fall season will be recognized, including the state champion Fallston High School field hockey team.
Action items include a resolution recognizing the 10-year volunteer service of Dr. David F. Jaffe on the Board Ethics Panel.
Contracts up for approval include a proposed $1.4 million, five-year lease contract to Xerox Corp. of Columbia, MD for two high volume production printers and a booklet maker. According school officials from the Office of Technology, the lease will support in-house printing, which has been cost-effective when compared with the cost of outside vendors.
Also up for approval is a $232,131 contract award to Centennial Contractors of Baltimore for upgrades to the 35-year-old stage lighting system in the auditorium at Havre de Grace High School.
The student representative to the school board, Anthony B. Cofrancesco, will make a presentation to his fellow board members on partial board voting rights for the student representative. Currently, the student position on the Harford County School Board does not include voting rights, which would require enabling legislation from the Maryland General Assembly. Prior efforts to pass such legislation have been unsuccessful, due in part to a lack of support from a majority of school board members.
A presentation is planned on “Post-Secondary Statistics and College Preparation” indicating that two-thirds of 2011 HCPS graduates met state University of Maryland entrance requirements; also, 67% of HCPS graduates enrolled in college immediately following high school in 2010 versus 64% in 2009. As always, the school board meeting will conclude with a report from Superintendent Robert M. Tomback.
