From the Residences at Bulle Rock:
On Thanksgiving morning, Havre de Grace-area residents can burn off some calories before the big feast and raise money for a great cause by participating in the 5th Annual Bulle Rock Turkey Trot benefiting the Susquehanna Hose Company.
Open to the public for all age groups and fitness levels, the 5K run and 1-mile walk will occur Thursday, Nov. 24, at the Residents’ Club at The Residences at Bulle Rock (1200 Bulle Rock Pkwy.). Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m., a warm- up will occur at 8:45 and the races will kick off at 9:00.
The 5K course will weave through The Residences at Bulle Rock and Bulle Rock Golf Course on paved roads and paths. A costumed turkey will greet participants and cheer them on at the finish line. The course will be well marked with monitors along the way, and Elite Race Management will record each participant’s finish times.
“We’re very excited to work with HeartSmart and the Bulle Rock community to help put on this great annual event. The race has grown steadily over the past few years, and we hope to continue that trend in 2011,” said Will Murdoch, CEO of Elite Race Management. “The switch to chip timing will provide remarkable accuracy and a quick turnaround on the results. We’re looking forward to keeping this race a Thanksgiving Day tradition for years to come.”
The 1-mile walk will share a common path with the 5K before taking a different route through the community on paved roads and paths. Strollers, pets, roller skates and wheeled devices will be allowed on this course, but not the 5K course.
Throughout the morning, there will be equipment and fire safety demonstrations by the Susquehanna Hose Company, which is responsible for the fire protection services for the City of Havre De Grace. Known as, ”The Fastest Volunteers in the Nation,” the Susquehanna Hose Company consists of five firehouses that operate five engines, tower, rescue, mini-pumper, three boats, a dive unit, swift water unit and four utility vehicles.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., prizes will be awarded to 5K winners in the following age categories: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30 -39, 40-49, 50- 59 and 60+. What’s more, the youngest and the oldest participants will receive an award.
The first four Bulle Rock Turkey Trots raised nearly $40,000, which was used to purchase new emergency equipment for The City of Havre de Grace and the Susquehanna Hose Company, including Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), carbon monoxide detectors for those who can’t afford them, hydraulic rams, rescue and escape units, as well as cash proceeds.
HeartSmart is coordinating registration for the event with entry fees as follows: $25 until Nov. 23; $30 on race day ($10 discount at either level for runners age 10 and under. The registration price includes goodie bags, refreshments and prizes for all participants, as well as long-sleeve logo T- shirts for the first 300 participants. Registration will be capped at 500 participants.
