From Harford County Public Schools:
To kick off the year-long school system budget development process, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert M. Tomback will hold a Budget Hearing on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Bel Air High School.
The public is encouraged to attend to provide input and share what they feel is important for consideration as the Superintendent prepares his proposed operating budget for the 2012-13 school year. If you cannot attend, please send your suggestions and comments to Budget@hcps.org.

I will be there. I will have some questions about policy and process the missing money at Patterson Mill and elsewhere. I will also be requesting a list of audit recommendations that the Superintendent and the School Board have decided not to implement.

The first thing on the agenda is where is the money that the county really does have for teachers raises? Come on Tomback get behind your techers! Stay home instead of taking vacation at the expense of the county to China~!!!!
frankly speaking says
No raises for anyone next year either….be glad that you have a job and excellent benefits. The local economy can’t afford raises and as is HCPS already gets 50% of county revenues to fund the school system yearly. The council will probably look to cut the property tax rate again to reduce the burden on taxpayers and local business whom can’t afford to pay more for the same service year after year. HCPS needs to become more efficient and manage their raises internally.

Teachers aren’t looking for a raise. They are merely asking to be paid the amount agreed upon in the salary scale.
LeAnn says
Well, I think someone should investigate the supposed “merit/performance” raises that upper level management received this year…where did that money come from?
frankly speaking says
the salary scale only provides direction as to how much to get paid IF THE COUNTY HAS THE MONEY TO FUND THE RAISES. Not a guarantee that you would be getting a raise.
question says
Would you approve of teacher raises if the county could find the money?
frankly speaking says
Sure, if the $$$ are there to support other county paid positions and Sheriff’s office also. Is all or nothing as far as I am concerned. Hard to ask for raises when people are losing their jobs around here, Don’t you think?
question says
I know that because of a quirk in the calendar the County Executive and the County Council approved county employees getting an extra pay check this year. Not sure if this affected the Sheriff’s office – does anyone out there know for sure? So if county employees benefit from this quirk shouldn’t everyone, including school system employees? It is like getting a raise sort of. Just asking.
Frustrated Parent says
I messed up and went to the hearing at 7:00. Why was it so early? Doesn’t seem like he was interested in getting too much feedback. Some people have jobs during the day outisde the county. He probably didn’t want to stick around and have to go home later.
