From Harford County government:
The Harford County Commission on Disabilities will host its annual employment awards luncheon on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at noon, at the Maryland Golf and Country Club in Bel Air. The keynote speaker will be Cindy Williams, Project Manager for the Maryland Seamless Transition Collaborative Program in Harford County.
The luncheon’s main purpose is to “celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of people with disabilities who overcome obstacles in their pursuit of excellence,” according to Committee Co-Chair Niki Biggs. “Their accomplishments are especially significant in this difficult job market,” she added.
“The Commission also uses the event to recognize contributions made by employers, families, friends and organizations to change attitudes about employees with disabilities in the workforce,” Biggs said. This year’s theme, announced by the U.S. Department of Labor, is “Profit by Investing in Workers with Disabilities.” “Return on investment means hiring the right talent,” said Kathy Martinez, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy. “Workers with disabilities represent all skill sets and are ready to get the job done.”
Employee of the Year honors will go to Jesse Howard Bane of Quality One, Inc., Havre de Grace. Awards of merit will be presented to Jaime Walther, Vincent Smith, Zewdu Mulgeta, and Brian Curl.
The Hickory Veterinary Hospital will be recognized as Employer of the Year, while the ShopRite of Aberdeen will receive an award of merit. Student Worker of the Year Awards will be presented to Jeremy Blackwood, who works at ShopRite Riverside, and to Katie Nicolucci, who works at Jo- Ann Fabrics and Crafts in Bel Air.
The Accessibility/Inclusion Award will be presented to Jason Richwine of Home Depot/Ken’s Krew in recognition of their support for the employment of persons with disabilities. The Ruth Helen Thompson Community Service Award will be presented to Cindy Turner of Harford Transit LINK. Nathan Schroen, an active volunteer with a number of community organizations will receive an award of merit in community service.
The Harford County Commission on Disabilities was established in 1995 to serve as the voice of the disability community in Harford County. Members are appointed by the County Executive, with the approval of the County Council.
The Harford County Department of Community Services was established in 1979 via Executive Order and works daily to meet the needs of our seniors, youth, persons with disabilities and those struggling to overcome addiction.
