Harford County Designates October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”

(Havre de Grace, MD) – – Harford County Executive David R. Craig has declared October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in Harford County. The County Executive will issue a formal proclamation during a ceremony at the Concord Point Lighthouse in Havre de Grace Friday evening, September 30 at 7:00 p.m.

“The month of October has been designated as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”, by the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. We are pleased to partner with Susan G. Komen Maryland Affiliate, and the City of Havre de Grace in an effort to heighten the awareness regarding breast cancer and efforts to eliminate this terrible disease,” stated County Executive Craig. Our proclamation is a symbol of Harford County Government’s support for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Maryland Affiliate in an effort to find a cure for breast cancer,” Craig remarked.

To help highlight “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”, the historic Concord Point Lighthouse in Havre de Grace will be illuminated in pink during the month of October. Additionally, the Harford County Government Administration Building in Bel Air will also be lighted in pink during October.

Among those joining County Executive Craig for the special lighting ceremony at the Concord Point Lighthouse will be Mayor Wayne H. Dougherty of Havre de Grace, members of the Havre de Grace City Council, representatives from Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Maryland Affiliate and breast cancer survivors and family members.

An estimated 39,900 women and approximately 450 men will die from breast cancer in 2011. Additionally, an estimated 4,850 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in Maryland in 2011 and approximately 800 will die from the disease.

According to statistics from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the State of Maryland has the fifth highest breast cancer death rate in the nation.

“The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has lead efforts for breast cancer awareness for more than a quarter of a century,” stated County Executive Craig.

“Harford County employees, family members, friends and cancer survivors are proud to support the work of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in helping to raise public education and awareness of breast cancer,” Craig commented
