From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
On September 2, 2011 at approximately 3:30 a.m., Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 700 block of Stanford Court in Edgewood, MD for a 911 call involving a domestic incident. Upon arrival deputies located the victim, Jamal Leon Jenkins, age 37 in his home. He did not appear to be breathing and was unresponsive. He was transported by Joppa Magnolia Fire Company to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 5 a.m.
Investigation determined that there was a physical dispute in the home between Jenkins’ fiancé’s daughter and her boyfriend, identified as Gary Charles Clayton III, age 25 of the 2400 block of Hanson Road in Edgewood MD. As the couple’s argument escalated, becoming physical in nature, the victim, Jenkins, attempted to get Clayton to leave the home which resulted in an altercation between them. The suspect, Clayton III, placed the victim, Jenkins in a choke hold rendering him unconscious before fleeing the scene. He was taken into custody at approximately 4:00 a.m.
Clayton III was placed under arrest and transported to the Harford County Detention Center for processing. He has been charged with 2nd degree Murder, 1st assault, two counts of 2nd degree assault, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment. He is currently being processed at the Harford County Detention Center.
Retired Deputy says
Crazy it does not sound like it was anything worth killing someone or giving up your life for but who knows! As they say life is about choices!
justanotherday says
Just another normal day in the “Wood”… Thank you Baltimore city for sending your waste up to Harford Co.
Just one of those people says
He wasn’t from Baltimore City he actually lived in a bad part of Edgewood and would not let a man bully his daughter. He worked at denny’s and was a good man to his family. You shouldn’t talk when you don’t know what your talking about.
justanotherday says
Hey dumb@ss was talking about the killer not the guy who died… Read more carefully next time, and I dont care if the murderer was from Bmore but its just typical Edgewood BS
getoutofdenial says
keep blaming an area (edgewood), its people, people everywhere. People with excuses!!!!
Compucluck says
Just another crime occurring within 1 mile of the police station that was not stopped by Harford County Sheriffs Department. The inept ability to not protect people’s lives from thugs seems to be the standard in Edgewood. Maybe if Bane and his boys were more worried about doing their job instead of spending all their time on the Dagger commenting on Delegate Impallaria, this man’s life could have been spared. Sheriff Bane and the Harford County Deputy’s Brigade are Edgewood’s real problem, the faster he’s voted out of office the better.
Here's Your Sign says
Ok genius, since you seem to have all the answers, how would you have prevented this crime from happening? It happened in a home during a domestic dispute. The deputies don’t and can’t live in the individual homes of every citizen in the county to make sure that the laws are being abided by. There has to be personal responsibility on behalf of the perpetrators of these crimes. In the mean time though, here’s your sign!
Q says
You’re an idiot. This happened during a domestic dispute inside a house and the police were there were there within minutes, started CPR immediately, and the ambulance arrived a minute later with a full crew and immediately moved Mr. Jenkins into the ambulance and continued CPR and other life saving measures that were unfortunately unsuccessful.
This wasn’t some gang banger shooting up another gang banger on the street in front of the precinct. This was a father trying to protect his daughter from being assaulted in his own house.
Don’t you dare use this family’s tragedy to further your own agenda.
David A. Porter says
This sounds remarkably like the Mayor of DC complaining after his gun ban was ruled unconstitutional. He argued there was no need for guns since the police could be there in minutes. Exactly how long do you think you can wait before you are dead from an act of violence? Putting the blame on police and law enforcement for their failure to anticipate crimes is absurd. But if you are psychic then you would know I was going to critcize you for being so clueless.
LL says
Say what you want about Bane, but regarding the officers…. How dare you! You really have no idea. No idea how the officers were there and worked on him, and did all that they could, continuing until the ambulance crew took over. This is an awful situation and I feel terribly for the family. The fact that individuals who read the Dagger actually voted you a thumbs up is mind-blowing. My husband is one of those police officers who work that sector frequently and despite what you may think or say, he, along with his fellow police officers will continue to do their best to keep everyone safe, both in and out of Edgewood. This includes you!
Really??? says
hopefully its you that gets choked out next time. you should write a memo to the Gov. saying how you would like an officer to live in every single home in harford county, so they can solve your problems, raise your family and kids due to you being a failure in all aspects of your life
stiffler says
Talk about “deeply seeded hatred and aggression”. Wow, you REALLY wish for someone to be choked out because they don’t think the police are doing a good job in Edgewood? I think the crime statistics speak for themselves. In the last ten years Edgewood has become the crime and murder mecca of Harford County. The degeneration of this area is reprehensible. Property owners have sold off and moved leaving the few residents that can’t get out or who want to stay to basically fend for themselves. I agree with COMPUCLUCK, I’m all about the idea of not getting killed instead of killed. But, there are instances, such as this one, where no preventative measures could have possibly prevented the crime. The personal responsibility that some Daggerheads refer to could be that maybe the victims daughter should not have been dating someone that had the potential to commit such a crime. I feel bad that the man was killed, but the criminal elements involved with both parties does raise doubt about the actual circumstances that led up to the altercation. We will never know what led up to this tragedy, yet we do know one man is dead and another is in jail possibly for the rest of his life. As for your wish that another member of the community should be “choked out” for comments that you do not agree with, that is deeply seeded hatred and aggression at its finest.
1voice says
I am deeply saddened by a senseless loss of life and even more so by the individuals who have chosen to use this incident in a distorted manner to push their own agendas. Please re-read your comments and honestly question yourseles – if it was your family’s grief, would this comfort you in any manner?
I wonder again, if the Daily Dagger is providing a service or a disservice by publishing comments that seem to be generated by such deeply seeded hatred and aggression. If the editor continues to allow yhese postings, I will discontinue reading The Daily Dagger and actvely campaign for others to do the same. It may be an alternative newspaper, but we do have other alternatives.
To the families of those involved, I am sorry for your losses. May the love of God bring you comfort.
Jean says
We all need to take a step back and realize that this world is getting more corrupt every day everywhere. Turn to the light and things will get better.Crime equals the drug problem which equals the problems and attitudes of people.
Compucluck says
oooohhh, Seems I struck gold. Just pointing out that this crime happened within 1 mile of the PRECINCT! No help arrived, once agin, until it was too late! All this in the middle of the political ploy by police that they have cleaned up EDGEWOOD, when in reality you haven’t done a thing. You guys can’t protect citizens, You can’t prevent crime and I’m sure the deep seated hatred and aggression is coming from within the walls of the precinct itself. I personally beleive that the police in EDGEWOOD hate the citizens thay are sworn to protect. I pointed out that once again you idiots in uniform did a bad job, you failed! I also pointed out that all the deputies of Harford County are more concerned with making an elected Delegate look bad than doing their job. You remember the job of protecting people, not the job of DAGGER browsing that thepolice are currently involved in. I also pointed out that Bane and his deputies are the REAL problem in EDGEWOOD and I stand by the comment. I would like thank the deputies that got on here to rant though, everyone needed to see how many posts are actually done on the Dagger by police and their hapless spouses. Once again, the police have failed the citizens of Harford County! Honesty, Integrity and Service…….yeah right.
Edgewood local says
You talk about rants… and you have the biggest rant of all! Is it only the police who you feel are so worthless? Perhaps I teach your children and will get to meet you at Back to School night! I wouldn’t take that out on your kids though, and the police will still protect you, even given your ungrateful attitude. Oh wait…. I bet your kids are homeschooled.
sharkey36 says
I still find it funny how compucluck can’t explain how he or she thinks this crime could have been prevented. So this happened within 1 mile of the precinct. Big deal. Do you think the deputies just sit around inside of the precinct and wait to receive a call? I’ll give you a hint, NOT HARDLY! This occurred at 3:30am. How many deputies do you think are even in the station. I’ll give you another hint. Maybe a couple. Even then they’re probably doing other things like oh, I don’t know, dealing with a citizen that walked in to the precinct. Or maybe answering any phone calls that may come in. Or assisting the deputies on the road with various requests.
You seem to lack basic reasoning skills and just spew baseless arguments. Do everyone a favor and think before you post.
compucluck says
Well Sharkey, why don’t you explain to the Dagger Readers why it took one and a half hours to get this guy to the hospital that is fifteen minutes away? Even though the article says he was not breathing and unresponsive when you arrived, a fast response of getting the victim to hospital should be priority number one. You guys had the suspect in custody at 4 a.m. yet the victim was still an hour away from being pronounced deceased at the hospital. Was the victim your real concern or was it the arrest? Sharkey, who is the real idiot here?
common sense says
Maybe you should consider reasoning before your argument. Just because the victim was pronounced deceased at 5am, does not mean that it took an hour and a half to get to the hospital. And even if it did take that long, which it did not, your argument wouldn’t be with the sheriff’s dept. There are many factors that you haven’t even considered before making your opinions. There may not have been a medical examiner immediately available to pronounce him deceased… He may have been on life support but lack of oxygen could’ve caused severe brain damage. To me it sounds like many people did all they could for him for an hour and a half. Not, that it took them that long to transport him to the hospital.
edgywood says
I thought I just read a week or two ago that the Governor gave you a grant to increase patrols and police presence in Edgewood due to it being a drug hotspot. Now, you say that there are not hardly any deputies present on nightshift. What is the money being used for if its not to increase the patrols and police presence. I don’t think extra patrols would have prevented this crime, but you are saying that you are undermaned basically. I don’t understand why.
Reggie says
Why would grant money be used to pay for extra officers to sit in the precinct? That doesn’t make any sense… That’s another reason why comments about crimes happening within a mile of the precinct are usually pretty stupid. They aren’t firefighters who are sitting around the firehouse waiting for a call. If officers are at the precinct then they’re usually writing reports or taking care of other similar duties.
In any case, getting grant money isn’t like waving a magic wand and all of sudden there instantly extra officers available. It takes time to implement a plan and if grant money is going to be used to hire more officers then it takes close to a year or more before they actually hits the streets (a couple months to go through the hiring process, 6-7 months for the academy, and then another couple months of field training.)
Compucluck says
After researching the victim and the defendant, it seems that the defendant and the victim were DRUG DEALERS! Looks like the victim was a convicted Marijuana Dealer and had pending charges for Assault! Are U sure Mr. Clayton didn’t do EDGEWOOD a favor. Who did the victim assault in the pending case. I think there is more going on here than the police want everyone to know. Gary Charles has multiple CDS distribution charges yet no convictions or history of violence. If the cops expect Harford County to believe that this was an incident of defending the victims daughter and not drug related then they really are a bunch of idiots. Don’t try and make the victim look like a person of innocense when in reality he is a convicted felon! Just more lies from the police trying to advance their own agenda.
Really??? says
wow you really an idiot. you know that the police report is public knowledge. from when the call came in the police officers were there within minutes. maybe when you write your memo to get officers in every household also add that telaport machine so officers and ems can get there in seconds. better yet maybe you should dress as a super hero and patrol yourself, you seem to know how police work should be done. a name like the lone dork so fit.
compucluck says
Well, since I’m not a cop like you, I would have to drive to Bel Air and get a copy of this police report you are talkin about. Thats really not on my things to do list, dirtbag. Besides, since when is the truth actually put on a police report! If it wasn’t for the fact that the police in Edgewood lie, maybe I wouldn’t question the facts of the case. As for your personal insults, I’ll consider the source.
YellowBrickRoad says
Is this still breaking news?
Dave says
Where was all of this passion and anger about county crime in the “Bel Air snatch and grab” article involving the white kids? Funny how every crime involving a black person brings out you trolls. You’re mighty choosy with your rage.
common sense says
If the areas and colors were reversed.. people would still be passionate and angry. The severity of the crime is what most people are concerned about. I just don’t think a “coinage dispenser” robbery compares to murder. But then again that’s just my opinion.
Are you serious? says
Dave are you for real??? People are angry and commenting about a murder. The McDonalds incident while pathetic didn’t hurt anyone. The day we start considering a small theft to be as serious as to murder is a sad day for all of us no matter what race. Please stop turning everything into a racial argument.
Nikki says
I’m really amazed that some people can be so cold on here!! so what, maybe the victim was a drug dealer, but he was still a human,no one deserves to have their life snatched away from them.If this story is in fact accurate, then obviously he was trying to diffuse a bad situation.there is people out there who make stupid decisions in life, but they don’t deserve to die.Think before you make stupid comments about the deceased,I’m sure he has family who will might read this. No one is perfect, but I don’t think anyone deserves to have their name slandered after they are deceased.Have more respect, because in the end,he was still a victim with a family, who loved him unconditionally. You’ve never walked in his shoes,he has a story, just like everybody else.
curious says
Nik Nik, its only slander if its untrue. The dude killed was a dealer. It says so right on the Court Search thingy. Dude’s only telling the truth no matter how hard it is to swallow.
Comradfrog says
Here my two cents: It would be Libel not Slander, Libel is the defamation of an individual’s or an entity’s character which is published in a written medium, such as a newspaper. However, any written communication can be libelous as long as it’s transmitted to a third party.
Webstersdictionary says
1.A published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation; a written defamation
2.The action or crime of publishing such a statement
– a councilor who sued two national newspapers for libel
– a libel action
3.A false and malicious statement about a person
4.A thing or circumstance that brings undeserved discredit on a person by misrepresentation
5.(in admiralty and ecclesiastical law) A plaintiff’s written declaration
This came straight from the dictionary. Nothing libelous has been told about the victim. People in this world are getting crazier all the time, especially when they imply something they don’t know the meaning of. In case you need more definitions there are many online dictionaries you can use to help you understand the meaning of words. I just don’t know if these tools will ever get you to understand the english language though……
Nikki says
@webstersdictionary,there is no reason to attack me.I just stated an opinion. If I misused the word slander, then I apologize.I didn’t realize I would offend you,or have someone belittle my education.I would never disrespect someone that way,I would expect the same.I’m sorry if I did.
webstersdictionary says
Nikki, seems you have been offended for no reason. The comments were directed at COMRADFROG. That is why the definition of libel was posted. Nikki, absolutely no offense was taken and none was meant to be given to you. I’m sorry you felt that the comment was directed toward you. The comment was in response to the incorrect understanding of the word libel. My little tidbit at the end was really just my amazement that someone could think that a true statement was libelous in any way.
