Upper Chesapeake Hospital failed a food inspection? What?
Louis says
Looks to me like they just hit everybody they could with the “must be held at proper cold temperature” violation.
Without any additional information, this isn’t very informative. Why were all these establishments and institutions (hospitals and schools) not keeping their food products cold enough? Did the law/guidelines recently change? Was the heat-wave we had a contributor? Are we talking about the freezers being a few degrees too warm, or tens of degrees too warm?
tard4me says
this libtard news report from a vague health inspection is just to sow fear into the sheeple.
There are no hard numbers given or explanation as to why a business “fails” or any further explanation of tests. Did they test the hot dogs at 7-11 at 3am? This isn’t exactly equivalent to gordon ramsey’s kitchen nightmare.
So what’s next? Are all these businesses closed? I think not, the tolerance on these inspections must be really low on the health concern otherwise a place would be shut down? Right?
Zachary Lucas says
The Health Dept. Loves to give out fines they basically need to hit every restaurant with at least one to pay for the inspection. My restaurant gets hit with the “Forks upside down in the holder” Constantly. Yeah you can get fined for that.
ALEX R says
I guess I have to ask the question if you know it is a violation why do you – and I’m using your word here – get hit with the same violation ‘constantly’. Is it that hard to put forks in a holder correctly? Constant violations from the health department sure make your place of business look bad. I’m not defending them but big brother is in charge.
Zachary Lucas says
Yes its almost impossible to keep the forks facing the same way we go through 800 a day. Every time you take a fork another one will roll over flip over or try to follow the other one out. Your server will never touch the “fork” part of your fork and I’d say 790 of the 800 forks are in the correct position. But he still fines us because we keep the place so clean he can’t find anything else wrong.
ALEX R says
Zachary, Thanks for the perfect example of what the conservatives are referring to when they talk about too much government regulation.
Mommie Dearest says
The Forest Hill Pizza Hut deserves to be fined. That place is nasty.
Restaurant Owner says
There are critical and non-critical violations. What you get cited for varies by inspector and the mood they’re in. It’s a joke. (The temperature violations listed are not major violations, with the exception of Sean Bolan’s.) You would be hit with a more serious violation if the temperature was off significantly.
Brian Goodman says
Every month we publish the list of the critical violations, for the full list (which includes non-critical violations) see the link at the end of the story.
Restaurant Owner says
The temperature violations are critical violations, just clarifying that if your off by a few degrees you get the “Food must be held at proper temp” violation, but if it’s way off, you get additional, more serious violations. They would then follow up and depending on the seriousness, they can obviously shut you down.

When I first found The Dagger a few years ago I pointed out that the inspection reports are not that helpful. I was pointed the Health Dept website where this is some additional and slightly helpful information. Such as the year-to-date accumulated reports for each facility, here is a direct link to the 93 page PDF
http://www.harfordcountymd.gov/Health/Download/1721.pdf
This is helpful if you want to check up on a specific location and you have familiarized yourself with the inspection codes.
I requested at the time that the Health Dept provide a useful “report” of the inspections that is easy to read and understand that lists the total number of infractions, types, fines, action, etc. This seems like it would be incredibly easy to do with a spreadsheet.
Nothing happened.
ALEX R says
NOBLE,
And why would you expect something different? Useful? Easy to read? Our government? Please stop trying to make sense.
dcfattboy says
i have often wondered what is up with these so-called reports. on the surface it looks like harf co is just a mass of illness-inducing places to eat. then i wondered if maybe the health dept. guy’s temp sensor needs to be calibrated.so is harf co just a big swill of under-cooked food, or is the (so-called) health dept just issuing a bunch of paper to justify it’s bureaucratic existence?since there is not a mass of food-poisoning being reported one wonders just what this inspection is all about?is the health dept really protecting harf co residents or just justifying its existence. perhaps the time has come for that agency to respond and inform the citizens. after all, the last time i checked the health dept was still taxpayer funded so they do owe us, the public that they are supposed to protect, a meaningful explanation. or are they just another paycheck-drawing bunch of parasitic bureaucrats?
tard4me says
While I agree these reports are borderline pointless for average joe, I do believe you still need inspectors in any business that serves food to make sure the integrity and compliance is good to go.
noble says
Correct, there is a real valuable service being performed here. Monitoring and inspection is ancient regulatory stuff and has its place, so long as it’s not arbitrary or abused.
What we don’t see is how the actual data/information is useful to citizens beyond that.
I don’t see where it would be so difficult to make a monthly or annual report of which establishments have the most violations. If one place has 8 in a year and 1 place has none and they are both inspected the same number of times, I see that as someting aproaching useful information for consumers.
Otherwise, not all. Which is why I don’t even read these reports anymore. It’s meaningless. There’s probably something in County code about publically posting inspection results.
Restaurant Owner says
Do they actually fine you? My restaurant is in NJ and they do not fine you in any way.
Health Eater says
A lot of these comments seem critical of the health department, but why? Food stored at the wrong temperature can go bad.
There are more restaurants in Harford County that are not on this list than those that are, so it must not be that difficult to comply with the regulations.
