From Harford County government:
During the period 2007 to 2009, as the result of unprecedented federal, state and local collaboration, Harford County recorded a 2.8% reduction in total crime and a 4.6% reduction in property crime. Over that same period, Harford County seized or recovered 262 guns, arrested 63 gang members, conducted 1,717 sex offender compliance verifications, entered 4,112 protective orders into state database, and prosecuted 50 violent crimes cases.
To continue preventing and controlling crime in Harford County, the Department of Community Services, Office of Drug Control Policy, received a grant of $192,514 from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention to help address crime and the social issues related with criminal activities in the Edgewood area. The grant will run from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.
The Collaborative Supervision and Focused Enforcement (CSAFE) program improves public safety by combining intensive supervision, community policing and mobilization with activities to reclaim public space. Intensive supervision of adult and juvenile offenders on probation or parole, rapid responses to public nuisances, prevention activities, and other strategies help these communities become self sufficient.
“We are proud of the accomplishments we have made,” said Harford County Executive David Craig. “Through strategies utilizing strong partnerships, we are able to reduce crime, prevent and control substance abuse, and keep our neighborhoods safe. I would like to thank the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention, specifically Executive Director Kristen Mahoney, for their staunch support of our endeavors.”
CSAFE promotes:
– Coordination of resources used to reduce offender recidivism
– Substance abuse treatment
– Improved information sharing among criminal justice and public safety agencies.
CSAFE focuses on increasing public safety through:
– Effective Policing
– Violence Prevention Unit Offender Supervision
– Crime Analysis
– Data Sharing through the use of technology
– Prosecution

That problem area of edgewood is about 8 blocks long,in walking distance of the police station and you get rewarded for that?Edgewood, maryland has more guns taken than baltimore county?262 guns and 62 gang members and one of the lowest crime rates in the state? This needs to be FACT checked!
Pissed with the Government says
You all need to spend some time around the hill in Edgewood, the cops are minutes away on foot and take some time responding to 911 calls by local businesses. Also this area isn’t the type of area where people call the police on crime as they are terrified of retaliation if they aren’t criminals or handle it them selves if they are criminals. This is getting to be a scary area that reminds me of Cherry Hill or Walbrook in Baltimore.
outkast says
Tell your friends from Cherry Hill to go back to baltimore!

Do you guys know that police are mostly re-active due to calls for service. that means most of the time a crime is going to happen then once the criminal act is committed then the police are called, mostly after the bad guy is already gone. It is extremely hard to stop crimes before they actually happen, it does happen but it is rare. You guys watch to much “cop” tv shows and think this job is easy and they should be able to be in the right place right time everytime cause the precinct is right there. Well guess what 90% of the time that precinct is empty with deputies. And the cars you see parked outside are extra cars adn that doesnt mean there are police inside. So get a clue!

I just hope this new police station will bring us the man power we need to control this HARFORD COUNTY problem that effects us all.
Mark Noske says
What have you been smokin’? OF COURSE THEY ARE REACTIVE! How can the police “react” to a crime before it happens? Oh, I know. They should buy a fleet of Delorians and equip them all with sirens, flashing lights, and flux capacitors. Or they could resurrect George Orwell’s Winston Smith and start arresting people for “Thought Crimes”.

Really??? – You wrote, “Well guess what 90% of the time that precinct is empty with deputies.”
I agree with you 100%, no matter how many deputies are at that precinct it will always be empty! Empty of honesty and integrity. Empty of duty and order. Empty of Law and fact. If the police in Edgewood are having such a hard time, maybe its because they are not very good at their job. For all the crime that happens within two blocks of the station, don’t you think it would be wise to have a responder team on hand at the precinct that could respond to criminal activity faster? No, I guess not, that would make way too much sense and would probably actually make the crime subside. Now you guys don’t want the crime to subside because then you won’t get those grants to pay for the salaries for you bunch of do nothings. Get real, crime is all over Harford County, not just Edgewood!
Really??? says
A responder team on hand…HaHa everything is manpower issues. guess what, chances are most of them will already be on a call when another call comes out. Now if its a priority they will send it right out from my understanding, however that is minutes after the incident already has occurred. the dispatch center has there own seperate policy on questions that they have to ask, then that person will then send that call to the actual person who will dispatch it out. So basically you are clueless in thinking that if a crime happens at 1pm, the victim calls 911 at 1:03pm the police should be there at 1:06pm.lol completely clueless.a more realistic time frame is crime at 1pm call in at 105pm dispatched at 107 108pm then response time pending where people are if not tied up so lets say 7mins. thats 115 116pm, which is 16mins after the incident ccurred and you exppect them to catch the bad guy. what do you think he or she waits around for the police to come. stop watching TV and if you want to know what it is like go and fill out a ride along paper and go out for a day. And compared to a lot of other towns and cities in MD, Edgewood is actually not to bad. Damn i think Harford county highest murder total in the last 10 yrs was around 8. so if you think thats an issue and you afraid to travel around there then in my opinion your a pu$$y. simple as that
ragnorok says
Thats right, you don’t want solutions, just more money! The response times for this precinct are pathetic at best! Especially during football season! I had to wait two hours for a response during a Ravens game and was then treated like I was bothering him when he is supposed to be doing his job! The TV should be removed from this precinct, then maybe you could actually protect the public that you swore an oath to. Response time would probably be better if you guys actually cared about your jobs! As for the pu$$y comment, you are what you eat….

What we need in edgewood are peace officers, not the ABCD cops we have now! If they weren’t so Arrogant, Belligerent, Callous and Disrespectful maybe people would trust them…but I doubt it. The justice system in Harford Co. is a joke, especially in Belair! You know we have reached a new low when the criminals are putting citizens in jail.
