The Harford County Council will weigh-in on the proposed Hatem Bridge toll increase Tuesday night by introducing a resolution indicating its opposition to the fee hike.
Among the many reasons the county council is opposed to the toll hike is a concern it would lead to an increase in truck traffic through North Harford, as vehicles begin to bypass the toll bridges in favor of the free ride across the Susquehanna River over the Conowingo Dam in Darlington.
Before the legislative portion of its meeting Tuesday night, the county council will first hold public hearings on one resolution and seven separate bills, beginning at 6 p.m.
The first public hearing is for a resolution to authorize an Economic Development Opportunity Fund loan to Chesapeake Defense Services, Inc. in the amount of $100,000 to help in the expansion of its operations at 4603 Compass Point Road in Belcamp. The computer tomography company is experiencing growth through federal contracts and subsequent expansion of its in-house product lines. As a result of the planned expansion, 18 current employees will be retained and an additional 3 or 4 will be hired. The loan will be authorized at an interest rate of 2.5% for a period of 10 years.
The remaining public hearings concern bills involving stormwater management regulation updates, an emergency act to provide another $108,000 to the Ruffs Mill Road Bridge repair project, and assorted general obligation and water and sewer bonds.
Also Tuesday night, the county council is expected to certify the Board of Education’s fiscal year 2012 budget; introduce and consider resolutions, which would form a Charter Review Board; amend the Water and Sewer Plan with the Spring 2011 Update; introduce a bill calling for a supplemental appropriation for the bridge inspection program; and introduce and consider amendments to bills regarding Maryland Emergency Management Assistance and the Economic Opportunity Loan Fund.
The county council is also expected to approve the executive appointments to the Department of Social Services Advisory Board, Personnel Advisory Board, Commission on Disabilities, as well as the chair and vice chair of the Economic Development Advisory Board and the Director of the Office of Information and Communication Technology.
Also on the agenda Tuesday night is a presentation of a proclamation in recognition of Parks & Recreation Month.

AMEN!!! The increase in truck traffic down Darlington Road has been an issue for years. It started once they replaced the bridge over Deer Creek, which was to allow the fire trucks from the new Darlington VFC to come south and Level VFC’s truck to go north to assist one another on calls. I have had the SHA out a few times asking what could be done with no answers to this annoying problem of speeding trucks with their loud ass jake brakes. I can only imagine what is to come if these toll increases come about.
