The Harford County Council will hold a public hearing and consider amendments Tuesday night regarding a bill which would protect families with children, pregnant women, and those in the process of adopting a child from from unlawful housing, finance, and employment discrimination.
The familial status bill states that an individual can not be discriminated against due to familial status and that any employer, employment agency, labor organization, or joint labor-management committee can not be required to grant preferential treatment to any individual or group because of familial status. For the purposes of the bill, familial status is defined as “one or more individuals, who have not attained the age of 18 years, being domiciled with a parent or another person having legal custody of such individual or individuals; or the designee of such parent or other person having such custody, with the written permission of such parent or other person. The protections afforded against discrimination on the basis of familial status shall apply to any person who is pregnant or is in the process of securing legal custody of any individual who has not attained the age of 18 years.”
The county council will also hold a public hearing on a bill designating the manager of Emergency Services for Harford County, as the authorized representative for purposes of requesting and responding to requests under the Maryland Emergency Management Assistance Compact.
Also Tuesday night, the county council will introduce bills regarding water and sewer and general obligation bonds and supplemental appropriations for the Ruffs Mill Bridge.
The agenda also included a presentation from the Joint Program Executive Office on Chemical and Biological Defense, recognition of Harford Living Treasures Dorothy Glackin and Earl Dennis, and executive appointments to the Harford Center Board of Directors, Economic Development Advisory Board, and Economic Development Tourism Advisory Board.
