“The Oyster Wars” by Gregory Bartles
The Oyster Wars were a series of sometimes violent disputes between oyster pirates and authorities and legal watermen from Maryland and Virginia in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River from 1865 until about 1959.
Gregory Bartles has worked with the Maryland Natural Resources Police since 1988. In 1989 he was promoted to Corporal and was promoted to Sergeant in 1996. In 2005 he was promoted to Lieutenant and took command of Howard, Carroll, and Montgomery Counties. In 2010 he transferred to his current position of Area 8 Commander covering Allegany and Garrett Counties. Gregory has been serving as the NRP’s Historian for several years and is the chairman of the DNR wide committee for Maryland Conservation History.
