From the office of Del. Pat McDonough:
MD PETITIONS’ LEADERS CRITICIZE O’MALLEY SIGNING OF MARYLAND “DREAM ACT”
With the stroke of a pen, Governor O’Malley demonstrated his lack of respect for the Constitution, federal law, Maryland taxpayers and simple fairness. By signing the so-called “Maryland Dream Act,” O’Malley has indicated his support for a law that is in conflict with federal law and could place in jeopardy hundreds of millions of dollars in out of state tuition revenues that support our higher education system.
The new law will provide a taxpayer benefit to illegal immigrants who enter Maryland’s higher education system. The benefit will result in tens of millions of taxpayers’ dollars subsidizing those without lawful presence in the United States. Delegate Pat McDonough, Honorary Chairperson of the Petition Drive stated, “The reckless legislation will deny Maryland students college placements, cost taxpayers, impact the state budget, and violate federal law. Federal law clearly states that one cannot aid or abet illegal aliens. The illegals may circumvent the system and secure jobs as nannies or landscapers, but prestigious organizations, like the Baltimore Sun or Washington Post would never hire an illegal immigrant in a professional capacity. No reputable company would jeopardize their reputation and vulnerability to federal prosecution by hiring someone for a key responsible position who is illegal.” Delegate McDonough continued, “Taxpayers are wasting millions educating someone who cannot and will not be hired legally. Politicians like Governor O’Malley have transformed Maryland into a ‘sanctuary state’ by becoming a Disneyland for illegal immigrants, attracting hundreds of thousands of them, and costing taxpayers about 2 billion dollars. This law will only make things worse.”
MDPetitions.com has been collecting signatures to place the “Dream Act” on the ballot in the November, 2012 Presidential election. They need 58,000 signatures by June 30th. Should the drive be successful, the “Dream Act” will be declared null and void until the November 2012 election results. MDPetitions.com will announce an official count around May 15th.
From the office of Del. Glen Glass:
Dream Act signed by Governor O’Malley today
Today marks a turning point for all ‘legal’ Maryland families and their children and future generations to come. Governor O’Malley signs the
In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants bill, also known as “The Dream Act” into law allowing illegal immigrants to pay the lower in-state tuition which then gives them seats in classrooms ‘legal’ Marylanders should have access to first! We as Marylanders cannot let this happen. This bill should go to referendum for the people to decide. It should not have been decided by politicians in Annapolis. If you want your voice to be heard go to www.mdpetitions.com, download the petition, sign it and pass it around to your neighbors, friends and family, get as many signatures as you can and send it back in. ‘LEGAL’ MARYLAND FAMILIES SHOULD COME FIRST!

From the office of Del. Kathy Szeliga:
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
One of the BAD bills that got through this year was In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants, better known as “The Dream Act”. I argued against the bill on the house floor and voted against it.
The governor signed this bill into law today. The only way to defeat this bad law is to petition it to the ballot. We need 35,000 signatures to the State Board of Elections by May 31st!
Delegate Neil Parrot from Washington County is leading the statewide effort to bring the bill to referendum. We can stop the bill before it takes effect but we need you to sign the referendum. I have included the link on this email. PLEASE READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM COMPLETELY. The state makes it difficult for petitions to succeed. This is by design. Please go to the link, follow directions and get this in ASAP. It can be done!
Be sure to print and sign your full name – no initials or nicknames.
The fact Democrats would force Marylanders to subsidize tuition benefits for illegal aliens when so many Marylanders cannot even afford to put their own children through college is outrageous.
You can sign the petition on the website, download talking points from the website, and print extra copies to give to your family, friends and neighbors.
Please do not delay. We need your help today.

From the office of Del. Neil Parrott:
MDPetitions.com Reaction -Governor O’Malley to sign “MD Dream Act”
Today Governor O’Malley signed into law SB 167, known as the Maryland Dream Act, that will provide in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens.
MDPetitions.com, under the leadership of Delegates Neil Parrott and Pat McDonough, has launched a petition drive to bring the bill to referendum in the November 2012 elections.
Delegate Parrott, Chairman, indicated that “It’s no surprise that Gov.O’Malley signed this legislation. The people of Maryland anticipated this and that is why people across the state are going to www.mdpetitions.com to sign the petition so we can bring this bill to referendum.”
Delegate Pat McDonough, Honorary Chairperson of the Petition Drive stated, “Taxpayers are wasting millions educating someone who cannot and will not be hired legally. Politicians like Governor O’Malley have transformed Maryland into a ‘sanctuary state’ by becoming a Disneyland for illegal immigrants, attracting hundreds of thousands of them, and costing taxpayers about 2 billion dollars. This law will only make things worse.”
Delegate Parrott noted that “this bill barely passed during the night on the last day of the session despite Bi-partisan opposition to the bill. Given the choice, I believe Marylanders will reject this legislation outright.”
The outpouring of support for our petition drive should serve as notice to Governor O’Malley and the legislators in Annapolis that Marylanders are fed up with the rampant abuse of our hard earned tax dollars.
Dave Francis says
1986 IMMIGRATION AMNESTY COST TAXPAYERS 78 BILLION. HOW MUCH TODAY’S AMNESTY?
After listening to Senator Lamar Smith (R-TX) today and with the backing of the huge populace of the TEA PARTY membership, President Obama has little chance if any at all, at passing immigration Reform? Polls show that nearly 70% of Americans oppose amnesty for all illegal aliens and that generations of legal Hispanics are less likely to reelect President Obama if he supports amnesty that is detrimental to their jobs. In the years following the 1986 Immigration Control and Reform bill, the cost afterwords to taxpayers 78 Billion dollars, according to the (CIS) Center for Immigration Studies. Somebody needs to ask the question, “What will the cost be 35 years later? Twice that amount? Whatever that amount, its more than the US can afford?
After the 1986 amnesty, illegal immigration increased significantly. The US Census Bureau 2000 data indicate that 700,000 to 800,000 illegal aliens have settled in the U.S. each year, with between 13 to 20 million illegal aliens now currently living in the United States The amnesty of 1986 was supposed to be a accepted just “One time” with no more in the future, but it was a failure with considerable fraud attached to it.
Yet since 1986, Congress passed a total of 7 amnesties for illegal aliens, which includes the 1986 Amnesty. 2. Including Section 245(i) The Amnesty of 1994 as a temporary progressive amnesty for 578,000 illegal aliens; 3. Section 245(i) The Extension Amnesty of 1997, which was an extension of the progressive amnesty created in 1994; 4. The Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) Amnesty of 1997; 5. The Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty (HRIFA) of 1998, an amnesty for 125,000 illegal’s. 6. The Late Amnesty of 2000, was an amnesty for approximately 400,000 illegal aliens claiming they should have been amnestied under the 1986 IRCA amnesty; 6. The LIFE Act Amnesty of 2000 was a restoration of the progressive Section of 245(i) amnesty to an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens.
This does not include the estimated 1.5 million clandestine legal immigrants that arrive here under special visas. Any amnesty for illegal aliens forgives their act of illegal immigration and unconditionally pardons other related illegal acts such as driving and working using false documents. President Obama has little chance of the passage of another amnesty, Promoting an amnesty to foreign nationals only attracts more illegal immigration into the United States. Sen. John Cornyn, (R-TX), said yesterday the president has failed to secure the border and thus failed to build consent to pass reform legislation. An amnesty for illegal aliens forgives their act of illegal immigration and implicitly forgives other related illegal acts such as driving and working using false documents.
Taxpayer must take their Politicians to task whether federal or State, by calling their offices as soon as possible at Senate—202-224–3121/ House—202-225–3121 or locate these lawmakers in your phone directory blue pages. The TEA PARTY will nurture new candidates for the 2012 Election. The TEA PARTY will give no leeway to any form of Immigration Reform—AMNESTY. The TEA PARTY is determined stop the drain of taxpayers’ money, which includes unfair taxes to support the instant citizenship of babies, through entering America illegally to foster welfare advantage. The TEA PARTY will rescind Chain Migration, which is a very large billion dollar expenditure, if sponsors don’t honor financial support for immediate family members. Legislators have a duty to mandate E-Verify, Secure Communities and 287G and make it impossible for illegal foreigners to get employment, or even get a handhold in America.
The TEA PARTY will dismantle Sanctuary City policies, the educational dream Act and unseat all pro-illegal immigrant Lawmakers, Governors, Mayors and those involved in this travesty. The second revolution has begun by THE TEA PARTY that will condemn any more free giveaways to illegal aliens. The American People are the Tea Party, comprising of every legal nationality and race. You should join this splinter party from the wilting RINO Republicans, who with Democrats are eroding this countries greatness. Highly skilled workers should be given immediate special entry visas, who have positions in reputable companies; these top of the cream individuals, will cost taxpayers nothing. Currently however, some plausible 20 million foreign aliens are indigent and replaced by American-legal resident low educated, minimum wage labor who should receive absolute priority.
YOU! THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OUT THERE ARE THE TEA PARTY AND UNITED, WE HAVE ALL THE POWER AGAINST BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS. WE WILL STOP THE INCESSANT SPENDING. THEY WILL CUT GOVERNMENT AND RID OURSELVES OF ALL THE FEDERAL AGENCIES, WHICH SHOULD BE ADMINISTERED BY THE 50 STATES. WE WILL CUT THE 14.5 TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. WE WILL DRILL FOR OIL IN AMERICA AND ESCAPE FOREIGN EXPENSES. WE WILL RENEGOTIATE THE UNFAIR TRADE TREATIES WITH CHINA, AND OTHER FOREIGN COUNTIES. CUT ALL TAX SUBSIDIES FOR OIL, ETHANOL AND THOUSANDS MORE INDUSTRIAL ENTITIES. WE WILL BUILD THE REAL BORDER FENCE.
Attn: Donate to Arizona’s border fence, by just typing in to Google: Arizona Governor Brewer. There must be further mandatory oversight of one election process, as there was rampant fraud in 3 States and the administration is unconcerned about future voting by illegal aliens.
Disappointed says
O’Malley not only signed to “give” to illegals but also signed to “take away” from legals. The Distinguished Scholars Award, giving chosen students who have high grade point averages $3000 per year, if enrolling in a MD. college, has been discontinued. Supposedly due to the economy? On the front page of today’s Baltimore Sun both issues are addressed. Students who were told they received the awards found out very late that they’d been cancelled. Many enrolled at a MD college because they counted on this money. Shame on you Mr. O’Malley. Guess votes are more important then the welfare of the legals of Maryland. r
Kim McCarthy says
The scholarships were reinstated.
Disappointed says
I hope that’s right. Show us where you saw this. Just this morning the news (per Baltimore Sun) was they were discontinued.
Harco mom of 3 says
yes, after all the bad press, O’Malley can be the hero and reinstate the scholarships for this year. If the students and their families had not contacted the newspaper, I am sure nothing would have been done.
Rob in Bel Air says
Disappointed,
That’s correct, the scholarship plan is back on board but I can also bet O’Malley didn’t go down without a fight. I’m sure his handlers told him that the decision to pull the money was not popular (and was getting some bad publicity). You have to realize that the democrats in Annapolis see Hispanics as a large voting block for them (the recipents of the scholarship are not). Hopefully Marylanders have wised up since this last legislative session, will vote against the “In-state Tuition bill for illegals” in the next election and start voting out democrats. However, I’m not going to hold my breath as Marylanders are not necessarily the smartest voters.
Proud to be Liberal says
I don’t hear McDonough complaining that a bill was passed that lowers the tax revenue that we would recieve from gambling at Rocky Gap. This is a give away to special interests that does not help citizens. We need that revenue.
phyllismurphy says
Shallow, stupid and uninformed politicians like OMalley are the reason American is in a great decline and ready for a big bust like the 30’s. Immigrants are great if legal…Arizona is a nightmare state because of illegals and their brainwashed thoughts that the 4 southwestern states belong to Mexico. Imagine if they take them over which is happening..over 50% of population now Mex and large percentage illegals. I have relative residing their and recovering from Tuscon students brazenly, aggressively and menacingly taking over a public meeting and chaining themselves to chairs..Should have been carried out on their chairs and put in jail. The Mexican illegals have been taught to hate Americans but put up a front to win the battle and believe me because of politicians like OMalley, they are winning. Former Mex president Vincente Fox and present Calderone do nothig but encouraging the swarm over our borders. These illegals have brought diseases back to the U.S. like, smallpox, measles, polio, whooping cough that had been eliminated until the massive movement began..Refer to Decline and fall of Roman Empire..Gauls quietly invaded like Mexico and suddenly Gauls took down a might empire..We certainly need to all learn spanish quickly I guess.
Disappointed says
Yet, people keep voting for O’Malley. We need a major change.
K says
I need one more signature for the petition sheet I’ve been working on. How about every other concerned citizen. Do you have a petition that you’re circulating? Have you signed up yet? Rolling up your sleaves and pounding the pavement is what will get this topic to referendum. The comments are also very important because that means folks are engaged in the topic. But, the footwork is vital so the citizens of this state can at least vote on the issue. Can you believe O’Malley signed this into law yesterday? How many more insidious pieces of legislation will ELECTED employees shove down our throats before the populice chokes on its own vomit?
Disappointed says
Wish these petition sheets were avaibable more easily. We started to sign this morning but it had to be printed out, folded a certain way, and sent through the mail. Would love to have them available in public places to make it easier for everyone to sign.
noble says
Ironically, the very things you’re complaining about are the things that make this one of the easiest petitions to sign for a referundum that I’ve ever seen in this State.
Wayne Norman says
If anyone would like to sign the petition in person in Bel Air, please feel free to stop by my law office at 808 South Main Street in Bel Air, Md 21014, (white house with green shutters). The office is open 9 to 5 week days, and is next door to Richardson’s Florist. If you can bring your voter registration card to make sure the petition is signed exactly like your card. Wayne Norman
Bob says
We should not allow any foreigner to enter the country unless they are a legal citizen here. We dont need the tourism and we certainly dont need the terrorism. In addition, we dont need anyone taking over jobs and businesses.
amazed. says
@Bob We already have laws that forbid entry to the U.S. without permission. The federal government, through a combination of incompetence, complacency and complicity, has failed to uphold these laws to such a deplorable extent that there are tens of millions of illegal immigrants present in the U.S. The federal government has not upheld the Constitution with respect to providing for the common defense and ensuring domestic tranquility. The bleeding hearts among us welcome illegals with open arms and feel it’s wrong to even consider them criminals. Nothing about this situation is likely to change in our lifetimes.
Proud to be Liberal says
I think it is more of Republicans denying the funds to uphold these laws. You have to give something up in order to give billionaires and oil companies tax breaks. This is why we are in debt.
Confused says
Why give funds to uphold these laws? What we should do is just give everyone a shot gun and let them take the law into their own hands. Kinda wild west style.
Rob in Bel Air says
Now you are being silly . . . for what you wrote and being a liberal (and admitting it).
Proud to be Liberal says
The GOP have attempted to defund:
• The Affordable Care Act
• The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) with oversight of consumer products, including home loans and credit cards.
• NPR
• Financial Regulatory Reform
• The EPA
• Planned Parenthood
• The list is long. They want to defund anything that does not help big business and billionaires.
Why would I mind admitting to being liberal as you don’t mind being a reactionary?
Qualified says
Juan Jose O’Maaaaaallllllley is just acting as a good socialist democrat. He cut spending, but the state budget is $1,000,000,000+ more than last year. The scholarship program for US/MARYLAND citizens is cut due to the budget crisis and redistributed to ILLEGAL aliens. Excuse me, New Americans. Please go to mdpetitions.com, follow the directions and put this law up for referrendum.
Gibby says
It is beyond outrageous that Governor O’Malley signed the in-state tuition bill to give illegals that benefit, while at the same time 350 of our most deserving Maryland high school graduates are losing the Distinguished Scholarship money they counted on when they made their decisions to attend MD universities instead of accepting other offers. Spending more millions on illegals just to have ‘an educated workforce’ is deplorable. And to let our own citizens down so badly, is despicable. So Maryland joins 10 or so other states who are so-called ‘sanctuary states.’
Disappointed says
Looks like the scholarships have been reinstated. Maybe we can be heard. Congratulatons to the 350 who earned this. Yahoo.
frankly speaking says
the scholarships don’t have anything to do with the dream act as it doesn’t take money from other programs, in fact all it gives is the right to charge in tuition rates to residents without legal papers that graduated from md highschools as oppossed to out of state tuition rates. the dream act does not give money or scholarships to anyone. Nice try to blend both issues together for political convenience specially as you tea baggers have called for less state spending, so there you have it as cutting programs that help american middle class attend college.
Phil Dirt says
Ignoring your customary homophobic comment, no, it doesn’t give anyone money – it just charges them less to go to school. Yes, they will end up with more money left over in their pockets than if it didn’t pass, but you are 100% correct.
Does it feel good to be correct, yet wrong (rather than simply wrong, as you usually are)?
And are you waiting for a handout from the government to buy a keyboard with a Shift key, or are you just a lazy SOB?
HACODEM says
I would have sign the online petiton from mdpetions BUT why do they need my phone number and email address? When that goes away they will get my signature
noble says
You are certainly welcome to object to giving out that information. My guess is though that they want to be able to contact you in case there is a problem with your signature and they are not able to count you on the petition. You’d be amazed how many signatures get rejected.
Enought is Enough says
I think it’s more than that. It states that it would check your name against the elections rolls immediately so there is no error. OK MDpetitions explain why you need the info?
Confused says
Have any of you actually read the act? It isn’t taking money from anyone. The students are stilled required to fill out the proper forms and show the same documentation that “legals” have to. So, if their parents aren’t paying taxes then there isn’t any way they can receive the money, right? Additionally, they have to apply for permanent residency. Most of these students looking to go to college were innocent children brought to the U.S. by their parents. There are ten other states utilizing a system such as this and their records reflect less than 300 total students participating. Here in Maryland, we are only talking about around 150. (that is 150 out of over 100,000 estimated undocumented workers in this state) Something tells me that those 100,000 are costing us some money. Where is the effort to fix that problem? And what about the long term tax effect. If these individuals are given a chance to seek citizenship and a college education wouldn’t they become tax payers and “functioning” members of society in the long run? We have many “legals” who can’t even achieve this. Where is the effort to fix that problem? I don’t think they will all end up as landscapers and nannys as it was previously so eloquently put. They still have to have meet the same educational merits as any other student applying to college, so common sense would tell me they aren’t idiots. Sometimes I think Delegate Pat McDonough is really out of touch.
Disappointed says
Seems to me the colleges are losing money. The money not received will have to come from somewhere.
Confused says
So you are okay with “illegals” attending college as long as they don’t receive in state tution? The colleges aren’t getting any less money. The spots would most likely be filled with other Maryland residents.
Disappointed says
Certainly illegals can attend college if they can afford it. They shouldn’t be given special privileges though. You don’t know if these spots would be filled by MD students or out of state students. They might be filled by out of state students who pay a lot more. Why short change the colleges. They’re expenses are going up too. Where is the lost money going to come from. Right you are “Amazed”, from our taxes. We pay again.
Confused says
It isn’t a special privilege. The act is worded in such a way that the benefit is only provided if their parents are paying into our tax system.
amazed. says
@Mr. Frankly Speaking and Curious, I keep hearing that this bill doesn’t take money from anyone… why is there an in and out of state tuition rate? I can only assume it’s because the in-state student is a member of a taxpaying family in the state from which the college receives some money. If an illegal, whose family isn’t paying taxes (and let’s not get into that argument because we know they aren’t) gets in-state tuition, who will pay the difference? The taxpayers will, of course. After all, they have lots of money and they like these feel good programs, right? Why is it liberals are always so quick to spend other people’s money and money that doesn’t even exist on their own “soothe my conscience” agendas?
frankly speaking says
Undocumented workers and their children are still MD RESIDENTS even if here illegally. That’s why they should pay the same as other Maryland residents. All open spots don’t go to legal kids either, many are set aside for foreign students as well, whom by the way will go back to their home countries with their degrees and knowledge gained here.
@phil dirt-thanks for the insult. that will sure gain you many credibility points amongst the tea baggers.
Gary says
I have never seen so many people get so bent over such a minor issue. Like you said there will be very few that will be able to take advantage of this. Now if all those illegals that are paying taxes stopped, that would something that would be noticed.
amazed. says
@Confused, so I guess I have to change my name to “Confused as well” since according to you:
“It isn’t a special privilege. The act is worded in such a way that the benefit is only provided if their parents are paying into our tax system.”
So the State of Maryland requires the illegal parents to prove they’re paying taxes… the State of Maryland now officially condones and abets the commission of a felony. Yes, that is confusing… who chooses which felonies are worthy of praise and reward?
Confused says
I never said the act was right or wrong.
amazed. says
Sorry Confused, I assumed since you were defending the act you felt it was right.
Confused says
It is not really a defense. It is stating facts. There is nothing more I can’t stand in politics then ignorance. Some politicians (in this case I am specifically calling out Delegate Pat McDonough) speak and people thinks its the honest word. Politicians always have an agenda-good or bad. Before people comment on this topic they should know what they are actually speaking against.
frankly speaking says
illegal is a misdemeanor offense, civil penalty at that.
Disappointed says
Wow. I’m also confused. If this isn’t a privilege what is. The illegals’ parents are not paying taxes to the state of
Maryland. We’re losing money.I have an idea. To make it all equal why not let everyone come to Maryhland and pay in state tuition. After all it’s not giving them money in their pockets. No. It’s taking money out of ours.
Confused says
I really would urge you to read the act. I will say it again, you have to pay taxes to recieve this benefit. If you want to say that you don’t have faith in the individuals reviewing the applications that is one thing but otherwise you are missing the point.
Disappointed says
Where do they pay taxes?
Confused says
The laws are written so that all individuals working in this country-illegal or legal must pay taxes. There is no law that says illegals can’t pay taxes. Our tax system does not discriminate. So if these individuals choice to work for”under the table” then their children can not take advantage of the benefits under this act.
amazed. says
I’m hoping to become educated through this… can you tell me how an illegal obtains a valid social security number in order to pay taxes?
Proud to be Liberal says
To the Comptroller of Maryland, the same place I pay.
Disappointed says
If they’re getting in state tuition but they’re coming from out of state how can they pay taxes to Maryland?
perplexed says
@disappointed
“They pay taxes at the 7’11 on their big gulps” LOL
Confused says
@Disappointed-they still have to meet residency requirements
Confused says
You don’t need a ss#-you can use an ITIN to pay taxes. And may “illegals” do this.
Confused says
From the IRS website “ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code.”
frankly speaking says
tea baggers, God love them!!!!. Illegals can have SS#’s sometimes they are false or duplicates that do pay taxes into the fund even if they can’t collect. no doubt, some probably get paid in cash, but everyone pays sales taxes, property taxes (even if you rent, taxes are paid by the landlord), gas tax, amussement tax, water, fees, permits and all the such. Others pay business taxes, since you don’t have to prove that you are legal to open a business and many others use other forms of ID to report taxable income.
Patrick says
Frankly Speaking have you heard that liberal progressives like you have a new name “Scumbaggers”. A scum bag is used condom.
frankly speaking says
scumbagger….at least they tried contraception which is better than the pull out method. Somehow, it just doesn’t have a ring to it because one can’t distinguish a scumbag liberal from a scumbag conservative. Teabaggers on the other hand, already have tea attached to them and they act like scumbags so the name is more apt for the tea party.
Proud to be Liberal says
Patrick: Are trying to be a playground child with a potty mouth or does it come naturally? Just to give you a history lesson about YOUR symbol:
On January 19, 2009, Graham Makohoniuk, a part-time trader and a member of Ticker Forum, posted a casual invitation on the market-ticker.org forums to “Mail a tea bag to congress and to senate. “
The TEA BAG PARTY wrote: “Please tell your friends and neighbors about the Tea Bag Protest Party. Today! This is a grass roots movement that relies on your participation for success. After you send your tea bag protest letter please register your protest here. This step is completely optional, but will help to ensure that your message is not ignored by Washington and the Media. For each individual tea bag protest that is registered here, we will also add another tea bag of our own to a large bundle of them that will be used for a public protest ceremony in the near future. The information that you provide will be compiled to demonstrate the scope of this grass roots movement.TeaBagParty.org was conceived by a small business person who has been working day and night to keep the business running and people employed for the past 7 years.”
So if you do not like to be called a tea bagger, complain to the folks who started your party.
noble says
First thing is people should stop reading headlines and bullet points and make sure you read the entire piece of legislation included in the printable petition sheet so you know exactly what you’re requesting a referundum for and what you would be voting on if it succeeds. There is a lot of misinformation being propogated.
That said, here’s why I signed it and am actively pursuing other signatures. Ilegal is not a gray fuzzy area, it either is or isn’t, and in the case of legal immigration and citizenship, it’s quite black and white. I really don’t care how you got here, why, or when. If you are not residing legally within the United States, you need to leave or be made to leave. Period. It’s the law. We need to enforce it. I don’t care if these kids were brought here 1 day old, lived here 18 years, paid taxes, straight A students, whatever. Time to go home and find another college. MAYBE if all the bright students from our neighbors to the South stayed in their own countries they could find solutions to all their problems, which in turn, become our problems. If the parents paid taxes, I thank them for their charitable donation to the Maryland Treasury, but sorry. Just about everyone in the world has to pay for the “sins of the father”, and these kids are no different. We are all paying every day for the bad choices our parents made.
I do think it’s at least sane to have the requirement that the students must begin the path to citizenship as part of the tuition break program, but unfortunately it doesn’t change the fact that law was broken.
There should be no law that provides a benefit of any kind for anything to any illegal resident of the United States (Maryland is one of those States) that is not included within their basic human rights.
Going to college, let alone with a tuition break, is not one of those rights. It is the privilege of those citizens and legal immigrants who have earned their acceptance to higher education.
frankly speaking says
so, should WOP’s have to go back to Italy since they came to the USA without papers and pay for the “sins of their fathers”? I rather you give me a true answer and have the “law” be applied to everyone equally, or just specially to those that come from south of the border?
noble says
If you’re not born here and are not a legal immigrant, I don’t care what you speak, what color you are, where or when you came from. Go home or be taken there.
But all the “sons” of those “fathers” who were born here, are lawful, legal, citizen residents of the US.
The point you allude to doesn’t apply. But thanks for playing race games.
Rob in Bel Air says
Frankly speaking,
This is a nation of immigrants and that is what has made this country great. However, continuing to allow an unfettered flow of immigrants into this country is not going to make it any greater. We need to know who is coming into the country and what they are going to do here (education, work, live). It’s been proven that the illegals entering the country for the last few decades have been more of a burden on the country (resources, public safety, medical, education) than a benefit. Even in Maryland it is estimated that illegal immigration costs tax payer a billion dollars. There is absolutely no excuse for allowing illegal immigration to continue and there is absolutely no excuse for providing certain benefits (for example the latest tuition bill). There is no legitimate excuse – NONE!!
Qualified says
It does not matter if thier name is Gustov, Jean Claude, Ivan or Juan. If they came to the US illegally, snuck across the border, get out. Anyone who aids them should be fined and jailed. Italians, Irish, Germans were turned back for lack of papers or illness. Illegal is illegal. Just because you don’t like the law is no reason to ignore it. Should we all pick the laws we don’t like and ignore them. In the words of Buggs Bunnie……”what a maroon”.
frankly speaking says
Most WOP’S were not returned to their countries of origen and they did not have to pay for “sins of their fathers” as a previous poster so arrogantly states that these kids today should be doing. In addition, illegals do contribute positively to our economy otherwise, they would not be here as the “free market” has already shown demand for their work, skills and service as they fill the vacuum that many Americans don’t want these jobs anyway.
Inmigration reform would give those whom paid taxes and do not have a criminal record an opportunity to become legal as our economy does need their labor. At the same time, labor laws need to be stricker and fines or jail time for those that keep hiring undocumented workers, so that the risk of working illegally is not just borne by the illegal workers but also by their masters as well.
noble says
Arrogant because I believe in the rule of law?? Are you being serious? If I were alive during the time of great immigrations from Europe, I would have said the same damn thing.
You’ve insulted me twice, great argument. It’s the only one you have because I’m on the right side of the law. Entering the country illegally, is well, ILLEGAL. It should be handled as criminal matter.
If I get pulled over for going 60 in a 55 should I be complaining because I only broke the law a little bit? Of course not, I broke it, I earned the punishment.
Please note that I was very specific about the status of these students. If they were BORN HERE, none of this matters because they are legal residents and citizens. If they immigrated legally, it doesn’t matter. Race is not the issue here. It’s about not having enough respect for the law of the land to not just disregard it when it’s convenient. There’s no convenience clause in the law. Now if you want to change that law, via immigration reform, that’s a different topic. We need immigration reform, in a variety of ways.
I personally had nothing to do with the invasion of America, slaughtering Native Americans, enslaving Africans, denying women the right to vote, bombing Hiroshima, race riots, or whatever, but I have to deal with the ramifications of them all.
frankly speaking says
I’m glad that you agree that I do have a point. At least within all your emotion some points of clarity have come through and I don’t agree with illegal entry, but they are here and our system employs them. At least Indentured slaves could buy they way to freedom after some time. The status quo doesn’t work and long term the conservative party loses out on a growing demographic. While most americans are now for illegal inmigration, they are for fair and equitable treatment of people in our country that we have allowed to come in, set up shop, work, open businesses and many have served in our millitary. Inmigration reform will happen sooner or later. I guess the tea baggers will have to be beaten at the polls first.
Patrick says
@Frankly a Scumbagger another typical liberal scumbag commentary by an open borders progressive.
Cdev says
I agree the first time you get caught employeeing illegals a mandatory minimum of 5K per head fine. This money goes to enforcement. 2nd offense forfiet the whole buisness. If you are stupid to open a new buisness then the third offense you forfiet the buisness and spend 2 years consecutive per head in jail!
Rob in Bel Air says
After reading some of these posts, it still amazes me that some still do not know the definition of illegal. If one is here illegally, they shouldn’t be getting anything. Accordingly, no private or governmental entity should be doing anything to aid and abet illegal activity. Business owners who hire illegals should be fined and politicians who sign legislation supporting illegals should be indicted. Until the law changes, illegal is illegal is illegal (and that’s the way it is).
Rob in Bel Air says
Proud to be liberal,
You are still being silly . . . and incorrect ! ! !
Proud to be Liberal says
Rob: You will have to show how I am being incorrect. Just saying so is demagogy and is what conservatives are good at. As far as being silly, that is inappropriate and meaningless.
Rob in Bel Air says
Still being silly. What are the democrats doing right now, what is the current debt, and where does “liberal” Obama want to take it . . . more debt? They just don’t get. I will agree that the Rupublicans are responsbile for much of the early debt, but since the dems took both houses, they have passed legislation that will put us further in debt. Their only solution, raise taxes, and few cuts in spending. The tax and spend liberals in both Washington, DC and Maryland have to go ! ! !
Proud to be Liberal says
Rob: I guess the “borrow and spend” republicans are the way to go? I have no problem with raising taxes on billionaires, ending tax loopholes and subsidies for oil companies. You are correct when you say we need to live within our means: we raise our means NOT cut services to the most vulnerable.
Disappointed says
One of the things that disappointed me so with O’Bama was, I remember him saying, “it will be pay as we go”. Not. These politicians have to realize if we don’t have the money then we can’t just keep going into debt. It’s called living within your budget.I voted for O’Bama because he was for change and I thought we needed it. Put my faith in the wrong person.I’m a Republican and I’ll never be mislead again.

Patrick-sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Your insults and labels do nothing for your cause and perpetuate your teabagger attitude which is nothing more than racists rants against minorities and delusional thoughts of a govt takeover of American life and culture. Hiding behind the flag is the last refuge of a scoundrel. You might as well wear hooded whites and burn crosses. fyi…I served in the Navy and proud to support a welcoming America to those who want a better life, you on the other hand support the status quo that turns our back to the principles that founded this country. My views of things are my own and I have varied views on different topics, no way you would label me a progressive in many of my opinions but again….your words will never break me.
Rob in Bel Air says
Patrick,
You have brought yourself down to the level of a liberal. Liberals typically start the name calling when they lose an argument and have nothing to fall back on. Liberals are the type of people who believe in certain things, for example, taking from the successful and giving to the not so successful (as long as it is not in their backyard or their money). For example, George Soros is a powerful and rich liberal who believes taking from one group and giving to another is the right thing to do. However, he is also the same person who keeps his money off-shore and pays little tax in this country.
There are scumbags in both parties and also some who profess to be liberals and those who espouse conservatism. The name calling and fear mongering are liberal traits that should be avoided. Take the high road my friend and don’t bring yourself down to their silliness.
Rob in Bel Air says
Patrick,
You are still wasting your time and lowering yourself to their level with the name calling. They may have fired the first shot, but they are shooting blanks (the same ole, same ole talking points and statistics distributed by liberal and democrat groups). The focus of the debate started with the so-called “Dream Act” and Maryland politicians aiding and abetting illegals in this state. I’m not sure where it is now.
You are arguing with those who identify with and admire the likes of Obama, George Soros, William Ayres, and Rosie (O’Donnell). Consequently, there is nothing you can say or do to help them find their way. They are lost (unfortunately, some of these rascals vote).
frankly speaking says
rob & patrick-You have yet to made a coherent argument that would merit a reasoned and logical response. You guys are so enchanted with your extreme political movement that you really can’t support any reasonable compromise in inmigration, deficit, tax issues, govt role and lack of public concern. I hope that your tea party is successfull enough to at least derail the republican party’s attempt to recapture the presidency. The tea party has been a mixed blessing to the GOP but it will in the end make them more marginal in the context of appealing to non-whites, the elderly, minorities, students, disabled, poor, unions, govt workers, women and pretty soon only Dividians, frontier men, wasps, ultra right and some other anti-govt supporters would vote for your vision of America.
Patrick says
@Frankly Scumbagger
I have no interest in debate at this time. I only have interest exposing liberal progressive Scumbagger hypocrisy.
And Rob, this is the low road and the gloves are off, get used to it.
Proud to be Liberal says
Patrick: Of course you have no interest in debate as you have nothing to say but tea party talking points filled with vitreous arguments and hate. However, you are correct in one thing, you are the embodiment of the low road.
frankly speaking says
Patrick-Sticks and stones…,ditto to you, ala Rush “with a hand tied behind my back just to make it fair” insert obnoxious laugh here…I think you just do this for kicks and I guess is funny in a way to watch or read, in this case “a train wreck happen”. I understand that you don’t have the intellect to argue points and just try to bring down the rest of this thread to a point in which you can compete and feel like you won. Sir, you are quite the winner ala Charlie Sheen and you should be proud of your fine intellect and superior wordsmith and hopefully the teabaggers can elect you to write their offensive and racist banners, signs and speeches.

Proud to be Liberal says
A Graet piece from the Sun: “The worst things about this obsession with “illegals” are its short-sightedness and the cheap complaint that we’re giving away the store and getting nothing in return. In fact, millions of undocumented workers contribute to the economy in some way, and across the country they’ve paid billions in taxes. (The chief actuary of the Social Security Administration estimates that by 2007, the SSA trust fund had received a net benefit of $120 billion — and perhaps as much as $240 billion — from undocumented workers.)
If anything, our policies should encourage more skilled immigrants to come to the United States — and we should encourage the ones already here, legal or illegal, to get a sound education and help shape the next economy.
Denying a tuition break to Maryland-resident students because their parents broke a law to raise their families in the United States is not only petty and unfair; it makes a problem out of an opportunity. There are plenty of young, hard-working, earnest and law-abiding “illegals” coming out of our high schools. They won’t all end up being brain surgeons, but who knows what other potential lies within any number of them? Given the need for a highly educated and creative workforce in the next economy, why would we want to do anything but support them, as we do their native-born peers?
We should help them with their education, then challenge them to pay back the favor by committing to citizenship and to making their new country stronger.” Dan Rodricks,The Sun, 5/15/11
Porter says
@Proud to be Liberal –
Why don’t you just say you are for open-borders?
Using Dan Rodricks and your illogic we should increase illegal immigration since it is such a graet [sic] benefit to the United States.
Proud to be Liberal says
Porter: I think we should increase LEGAL immigration. We should make it easier for willing workers that contribute to our country to become citizens. It would be a win-win situation for us.
Porter says
@Proud to be Liberal-
We could certainly increase the amount of legal immigrants we allow into the US.
We should encourage engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, doctors and other professionals to emigrate from countries around the world to the US.
Proud to be Liberal says
Porter: Yes engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, doctors, etc. are good; but so are janitors, masons, carpenters, maids, and people who do nails as it is their children who become doctors, etc.
Porter says
Proud to be Liberal –
We put a greater value for good reason on professionals and investors since they bring both knowledge and wealth with them
They are also less likely to be a welfare entitlement drain on our economy.
You simply can’t have a welfare state such as we have here in the US and also have open-borders.
Proud to be Liberal says
Porter: I beg to differ. We do not have a welfare state. Offering temporary (temporary because of Clinton) help to citizens who need it does not constitute a welfare state. Remember many who need welfare did NOT cause their problems. In many cases people have lost jobs when companies move manufacturing off shore, or flooding, or oil spills, etc. Surely you would not deny succor to them?
Porter says
@Proud to be a Liberal
Milton Friedman would disagree with you that we do not have a welfare state replete with myriad social entitlement programs.
I agree with Milton Friedman that you cannot have a welfare state and open-borders.
Proud to be Liberal says
Porter: That is just hyperbole. A welfare state is a government that provides for the TOTAL well-being of its citizens and is akin to socialism. However, very few true welfare states exist. The United States is a good example of this as it provides some social insurance or entitlement programs to its citizens but does not espouse socialism. As socialism and democracy cannot go hand in hand, therefore, it is impossible for the United States to be one of the true welfare states. The United States does make efforts to provide for persons in need through a myriad of social service programs known as welfare. (welfareinfo.org) At any rate, what would you cut: social security. Medicare? I have both and would not be able to exist without them.
Patrick says
Proud to be a Liberal –
You can’t have a “Welfare State” such as it is in the United States and have open-borders.
stalkerdavid says
I think Angelica would agree with you David…….Not
amazed. says
@Proud to be Liberal: I can see why you like Rodricks, only a dyed in the wool liberal can lecture us about “law-abiding “illegals””. Interesting oxymoron. I’m still wondering who holds the list of Maryland’s acceptable felonies… I’d like to see if some of the things I have in mind are forgivable.
Rob in Bel Air says
Oh yeah, the Sunpapers . . . a completely objective newspaper (rather, an arm of the democratic party).
frank says
maryland graduates approximately 63,000 high school students each year. less than that matriculate to college. less than that matriculate to a college in maryland. some students whose parents are illegal immigrants were born in the u.s. and are u.s. citizens. part of the bill stipulates the student must do two years at a community college before matriculating to a 4 year maryland school. so, how many students are we really talking about here? let’s talk real numbers. how many illegal students are we talking about? the “illegal students” still have to pay full tuition, etc. so tell me now, they aren’t getting anything for free — so where is the concern? would you rather them getting pregnant, selling crack and dope on the city streets, in gangs, in jail doing time… all at greater cost to the taxpayer. or would you rather them be good republicans, get a quality maryland education, be productive members of society, and give back to this great state or the country in exchange for their gratitude? which outcome would you rather promote?
Rob in Bel Air says
Gary,
It seems that the only persons getting “bent” are those who try to defend this crazy bill. Besides that, persons here illegally are not paying the taxes you think they are paying. Moreover, what taxes they do pay does not come close to the cost to taxpayers for their medical care, welfare, education, and criminal justice. Not even close ! ! !
Proud to be Liberal says
ROB IN BEL AIR: and you know this because…
Rob in Bel Air says
Proud to be Liberal,
Wake up and stop being liberal. Have you visited any of the emergency rooms lately? MVA? It’s common sense (something liberals lack). But if you want facts, look it up.
Proud to be Liberal says
Rob: Why don’t you just admit that your “facts” are Fox talking points? You can’t product them because they exists only in your addled fantasy. You people hate minorities so much that you are willing to destroy the very thing that made this a great country. Sorry, but your white only world is gone forever and the sooner you reconcile to this the better you will fit into our society.
amazed. says
@Proud to be Liberal: Even if I set aside the fact that this bill rewards people who are here illegally, not to mention the slap in the face for those who have labored through the tedious process to achieve legal status, I am still left with one troubling thought… The great state of Maryland is going to have full knowledge that the parents of these students are guilty of a felony. The state via it’s governor will therefore condone and abet the commission of a crime. Now, with that understanding, is there a list of crimes I can get a pass on? Is there some liberal committee I need to submit the felony of my choice to for approval? If I declare myself liberal after the fact will the felony I’ve committed be waived retroactively?
Rob in Bel Air says
Our society? Whose society you referring to? George Soros? Obama? Come one, stop being liberal.
Cdev says
I agree to an extent. That said instead of wasting time with a bill that actually only benefits a small few let us spend that effort send to prison the tratorous americans that hire the kids parents!
Proud to be Liberal says
Why not reform immigration instead and make it easier for these hard working people to become taxpaying Americans? They would only improve this country.
Honestly says
Proud to be Liberal – Sure let’s give citizenship to illegals so we can grow the entitled permanent underclass who sap the life out of our economy and further burden taxpayers.
Proud to be Liberal says
HONESTLY: How do working tax payers sap the economy? The only people who do that are the billionaire bankers who have taken billions and given NOTHING in return. I can’t understand how you people stick up for the very parasites that are ruining YOUR lives and the country.
Honestly says
Proud to be Liberal – The blame for our economic decline is the government, the “parasites” you decry pay the majority of federal and state income taxes and they create the jobs.
You want amnesty for illegals who will become wards of the state is to increase the permanent underclass who will dutifully vote to increase entitlement programs.
Rob in Bel Air says
Proud to be Liberal,
You seem to be a very nice person, but I truly believe you may be clueless in these matters. Liberals tend to be Math challenged as evidenced in Annapolis and the Obama administration. Moreover, those in Annapolis (and Washington) are looking for votes from certain voting blocks (nothing to do with compassion). I respect your posture on this and maybe we can agree to disagree on this matter; however, from the posts, it looks like you may be out-numbered (perhaps it’s a sample of the sentiment of most Maryland voters). Enough said—the voters will decide the issue in the next election. I have my money on the bill taking a dive.
Proud to be Liberal says
ROB: The voters in Harford County maybe but, thank God, not in the rest of the “Free State.” I agree, let the voters decide.
Rob in Bel Air, says
Proud to be Liberal,
You left out many other counties. Just say, “Montgomery, PG, parts of Howard and Baltimore counties, and Baltimore City will likely have the most supporters for the bill.” The rest . . . that reamins to be seen but I’m guessing the bill will sink.
O’Malley and thugs stepped over the line on this one.
Rob in Bel Air says
Proud to be Liberal,
Proud to be Liberal,
One more thing, I do not think that most that come here illegally are interested in improving this country. They sneak in, counterfeit and forge documents and work for their own benefit (and send money back to their home country). In the meantime, they are drawing on U.S. tax dollars in terms of medical care, education, welfare, etc. Regardless of how much they spend here, the taxes paid do not come close to what it cost Americans. That’s why I feel you are clueless (said in a separate post)—to think they are interested in improving THIS country. No way, Jose. I know this because it’s common knowledge—just ask anyone here illegally.
