From the Office of Sen. Nancy Jacobs:
Senator Nancy Jacobs (R-Harford/Cecil) announces that Suzanne Collins, an experienced Political Reporter, has just been named Chief of Staff. Suzanne has been with WJZ-TV for 27 years, much of that time covering the Maryland General Assembly.
“Suzanne’s understanding of public policy, the legislative process and her compassion for people make her a wonderful addition to our staff,” according to Senator Jacobs. Suzanne will be researching legislation, helping constituents and using her knowledge of government to support Senator Jacobs in her role as Minority Leader.
Suzanne joined WJZ-TV in 1984 as head of the Investigative Reporting Unit. She worked at WBAL-TV from 1979 to 1984. Suzanne has served as a News Editor, Special Projects Producer, and Reporter covering the State House during the tenure of four Maryland Governors.
Suzanne will join Senator Jacobs in Havre de Grace on Monday, May 2 for a breakfast at Bulle Rock Golf Course where she will be introduced to friends and constituents of the Senator.
Suzanne will come on board May 12th and looks forward to working with the people of Harford and Cecil Counties, addressing their needs and concerns. We welcome Suzanne to Annapolis!

Not an Art supported, just an independent observer and thinker.

Do we know what the salary is the tax payers of Maryland will be paying Ms. Collins. Was there a Chief of Staff prior to Ms. Collins, and if so why did the position become vacant. If not why the need now.
I have no qualm with Ms. Jacobs, nor the position being filled but I would think it requires vast administrative and supervisory experience if Ms. Collins will be overseeing people.

I could be wrong, but I am reasonably sure the cost to taxpayers would be $0.
From what I understand, the Dept of Legis Services supplies legislative aids to all Assembly members. These aids are hired and paid for by the State, and considered “non-partisan”.
This hiring, I would imagine, would fall into the category of “partisan” staff and would be paid for by the Assembly member’s campaign contributions.
Anyone feel free to correct me.
Edmund Picard says
Thank you Noble for your answer.

cheap shot. I would think that chief of staff would require expertise in navigating the hallowed halls of annapolis to get things done. in that respect Ms. Collins seems eminently qualified. if you have no “qualm” with Sen. Jacobs then should not your inquiry be directed to All State Senators and the cost to the taxpayers of THEIR expenditures? so perhaps the good MR. Edmund might enlighten us as to how he discovered no other senators have a chief of staff position so he directed his barb at Sen Jacobs? oh, that’s right, you have no qualm with the Hon. Ms. Jacobs.

DC Fatt: I believe Noble responded in a sufficient manner to my question which I believe was resonable and fair.
