Dr. Barbara Slusher to be Awarded John Carroll’s Riepe Alumni Award

Bel Air, MD: The John Carroll School announces that Dr. Barbara (Stauch) Slusher of the class of 1982 will be awarded the Rev. Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award for 2011. Dr. Slusher exemplifies the four outcomes of a John Carroll education: a strong sense of self, excellence in achievement of personal and professional aspirations, a moral compass, and a global perspective. She has excelled in her professional career as a neuroscientist and has been a consistent community leader. Dr. Slusher is the mother of three children, two of whom attend John Carroll. She has incorporated service into her personal and family life, and she remains a committed volunteer and donor to The John Carroll School. The John Carroll School can be proud to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of this most distinguished alumna.

Dr. Slusher is the Chief Scientific Officer for the Brain Science Institute NeuroTranslational Program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where she leads a drug-discovery team to find new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Prior to joining Hopkins, she had a highly accomplished career in the pharmaceutical industry, holding positions of increasing responsibility at both large and small companies, including ICI Pharmaceuticals, Zeneca (now AstraZeneca), Guilford Pharmaceuticals, MGI Pharma, and the Eisai Research Institute. She is an inventor of sixty-two issued patents and has published over 100 scientific articles, reviews and book chapters. Dr. Slusher received her undergraduate degree from Dickinson College where she graduated valedictorian, majoring in Chemistry with a double minor in Physics and Sociology. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences from John Hopkins School of Medicine while simultaneously earning her Masters of Administration Science from the Johns Hopkins School of Continuing Studies.

Dr. Slusher is committed to community service and passes on that tradition to her family. This past Christmas, Dr. Slusher, her husband Chuck, son Ethan and daughter Amy traveled to Kenya, Africa to volunteer for a program called “Caring for Kids of Kenya.” Dr. Slusher has been a youth travel-lacrosse coach, and founder and member of the Greene Turtle Woman’s Lacrosse Club. She was recently awarded the United Way Big Brother/Big Sister Volunteer-of-the-Year Award for her work with inner-city children and was awarded a volunteer honor from Habitat for Humanity.

The John Carroll School is proud to honor Dr. Slusher with this most prestigious award. The award is named in memory of the Rev. Charles K. Riepe, who served as the President, Principal, and Chaplain of The John Carroll School. He established it as a Catholic, independent school in 1971. The award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and community service. The winner shall be an exemplary role model consistent with the Catholic values and philosophy of The John Carroll School. This award is the highest honor that can be given to alumni of The John Carroll School. The award will be presented to Dr. Slusher on June 5, 2011 at the 2011 Commencement, and she will be the keynote speaker at the ceremonies.
