From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
At approximately 2:04 am on Sunday, September 26, 2010, Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a single vehicle accident involving a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle that occurred in the 100 block of E. Jarrettsville Road just east of Industry Lane in Bel Air, MD. The motorcycle was operated by Matthew Hunter Cavey, age 23, of Delta, PA with passenger, Elijah Cole Kelley, age 16, of Arbutus, MD.
Preliminary investigation by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit determined that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on E. Jarrettsville Road, when for unknown reasons, it struck the curb on the right hand side of the road. The motorcycle lost control, sliding approximately 100ft on its side before striking a BGE utility pole and a telephone/cable box. The vehicle then traveled an additional 60ft before coming to rest on the westbound shoulder of E. Jarrettsville Road. Both young men were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
The operator of the motorcycle, Cavey, was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center by Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company where he was pronounced deceased at 3:20am. The passenger, Kelley, was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma by Delaware State Police Trooper 4 and is currently listed in serious condition.
As in all fatal motor vehicle accidents, the States Attorney’s Office will review the investigation to determine if any charges will be filed.

damn. wonder if the curbing was the turnout just installed on 23?
MS says
I don’t think so. This sounds like it happened right there at the Sandlot indoor batting cages across from Maxa Meadows subdivision – right about where, traveling in the eastbound direction, the speed limit goes from 30 to 40 mph. Sorry folks, not trying to be too insensitive here but but a motorcycle sliding on its side (i.e., not on its wheels – friction) 100 ft, hitting something immovable, and then sliding another 60 ft… I live on a road about like this that’s close to where this happened and I can tell you, MOST (not all – please don’t take this out of context) motorcycles DO NOT do the speed limits on these kinds of roads… ESPECIALLY at 2:00 in the morning.
Anyway, assuming Frankie is referring to the newer roundabout on Rt 23 (East-West Hwy) where Commerce Rd extends to, that would be entirely on the other side of the whole industrial complex from where this happened.
RIP and my condolences to all those affected by this.

then this was old Rte. 23, coming out of Forest Hill?
that’s a narrow road and i doubt the passenger knows what happened/

E.Jarretsville road runs parallel to 23.
MS says
Drove by there on my way home from work yesterday and its actually a little further east from where Industrial Ln and Maxa Meadows Ln intersects E Jarrettsville Rd. Just after the 3rd driveway – there was actually a couple of people there walking around where it happened. The curb where the motorcycle initially hit on the right there actually ends right after that spot. But the road starts to curve back around to the left ever so slightly at that point.

Yes, for us old timers, Jarrettsville Rd is the “old’23

There was a party with alcohol involved.
Theresa says
Well do you know for sure that he was totally wasted when he left the party? I have heard already about the alcohol being involed, but i wasn’t there and i dont know if he was trashed when he left and untill someone that was there at the party saw him before he left, can tell me what happened i’m not making any assumptions. I do however have a hard time seeing him being totally wasted and having a 16yr. old kid get on a motorcycle with him, but i could be wrong.
