With the 2010 Gubernatorial Primary Election now less than two weeks away, local and national groups, agencies, and organizations have started announcing their slates of endorsed candidates.
Compiled below are the endorsements released by the Harford County Education Association, Route 40 and North Harford Republican Clubs, the National Federation of Independent Business, Maryland League Of Conservation Voters, and New Harford Democratic Club.
Please note: The Dagger does not necessarily condone or condemn these endorsements, and it merely passing them along for our readers to interpret.
Harford County Education Association Releases First Round of Candidate Endorsements–Jones for District 35A, Frisch, Eaton for School Board
With the September 14 primary fast approaching, the Harford County Education Association has released a list of endorsements for several local offices, with more to follow as candidate interviews are completed this week.
The endorsements favor incumbents so far, with the exception of John Jones, a Democrat and a former HCEA president, who got the nod in District 35A for one of two seats currently held by Republicans Wayne Norman and Donna Stifler.
For the first school board elections in Harford County, Bob Frisch, a Baltimore County Public School teacher was the HCEA pick in District A (Edgewood/Joppa) and Ron Eaton, a former president of the Harford County Board of Education, was chosen in District B (Fallston/Abingdon). School board elections in Maryland are non-partisan.
HCEA is the largest bargaining unit in Harford County Public Schools, representing all of the approximately 3,100 certified staff members, including teachers, who work directly with students. About 2,100 of the represented employees are also members of HCEA, according to the association’s president, Randy Cerveny.
Cerveny sent the list of HCEA endorsements in the following e-mail to members on Friday, August 27, 2010. The list will be updated this Friday, September 3.
Political Recommendations
There aren’t many topics that get members as riled up as political endorsements. Below is the procedure HCEA follows to recommend a candidate.
· All candidates from all parties are invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their views on public education, nothing else.
· Having completed the questionnaire they are invited to be interviewed by HCEA’s government relations committee.
· Only after completing the previous steps can the committee vote to determine whether or not to recommend a candidate.
· The recommendations of the committee are passed on the HCEA Board for final approval and that information is shared with our members. These are only recommendations, based on the candidates’ views/platform on public education, nothing else. As a voter it is your job to determine if the remainder of the candidates’ platform coincides with your views. The educational views of these candidates often impact funding, legislation and policies that can affect your job and income. HCEA hopes you will give serious consideration to these recommendations.
County Council
· District A – Dion Guthrie
· District B – will advise following the completion of interviews next week.
· District C – will advise following the completion of interviews next week.
· District E – Richard Slutzky
· District F – Mary Ann LisantiIn addition to the newly selected candidates, there are some “friendly incumbents” who over the years in the General Assembly have continuously voted in support of public education and educators. We look forward to continuing our work with the many incumbents and newly elected Senators and Delegates in the coming years.
Delegates:
· District 34A – Mary-Dulany James and Dan Reilly
· District 35A – John JonesBoard of Education
· District A – Robert Frisch
· District B – Ron Eaton
· District D – will advise following the completion of interviews next week.We realize these endorsements are made prior to the primary, HCEA will again re-examine the campaigns and candidates following the primary election in September. No dues dollars go to any campaign, slate, or candidate. Assistance is provided through a separate fund that accepts voluntary contributions only from members.

Del. Norman and Others Receive Endorsement from Small Business Organization
Annapolis, MD – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) — the Nation’s largest advocacy group for small and independent businesses — endorsed Wayne Norman for Delegate, District 35A, this week.
Tim Goodrich, NFIB’s East Region Public Policy Director, lauded Delegate Norman for having “a solid understanding of the problems and priorities of small business owners.”
In a letter to Delegate Norman, Mr. Goodrich said that “[b]ased on your Maryland NFIB voting record, we believe that you are the best choice to represent the views of the men and women who own, operate and work in Maryland small businesses.”
In accepting the endorsement, Delegate Norman expressed his appreciation and noted that “as a small business person myself, who makes weekly payroll for ten individuals, I take special pride in receiving this endorsement. The NFIB is a venerable organization and the voice of small business in Washington DC and Annapolis.”
In recent years, NFIB has advocated for tort reform, the elimination of estate taxes, and the lowering of health care costs for small businesses and their employees by giving them more affordable options, among other issues.
In 2007, NFIB strongly opposed the 20% increase in Maryland’s sales tax, which both Bob Ehrlich and Wayne Norman have pledged to repeal following the election.
NFIB has also endorsed District 34 Sen. Nancy Jacobs, District 7 Dels. Rick Impallaria and Pat McDonough, District 35B Del. Susan McComas, and District 35A Del. Donna Stifler.
Dels. Riley and James Receives Endorsement From The Maryland League Of Conservation Voters
“Delegate Riley has received an outstanding score of 100% in 2010 and he has a lifetime score of 88% from the Maryland League of Conservation Voters. If we are to restore the Chesapeake Bay and our waterways and move Maryland to a clean energy economy then we must support legislators we can count on. During his eight years serving District 34A in Harford and Cecil Counties, Delegate Riley has consistently supported policies that protect Maryland’s environmental health. That’s why the Maryland League of Conservation Voters endorsed him.”
The only other Harford legislator endorsed by the Maryland League of Conservation Voters is District 34A Del. Mary-Dulany James. No candidates, senators or delegates, from Districts 7, 35A, or 35B were endorsed.
Candidates Endorsed By The New Harford Democratic Club
The basic premise of the New Harford Democratic Club is to encourage and support viable Democratic candidates for local offices. As part of that effort, members of the club voted to endorse those candidates they feel best represent the ideals of the party and who will put forth the effort necessary to win.
It is essential, therefore, that members of the New Harford Democratic Club step forward to make those endorsements meaningful. Club members can achieve this in many ways:
· Volunteer to make phone calls, from a central location or from your home.
· Volunteer to walk door-to-door with the candidate and/or volunteers
· Help put up signs
· Volunteer at campaign headquarters to answer phones or stuff envelopes
· Offer to hold a “Meet-and Greet” at your home.
· Offer to hold a fundraiser for a candidate
· Make a financial contribution to the campaigns of endorsed candidatesOur candidates have stepped up to represent our party in an election. It’s a hard job, it’s time consuming and tough on their personal life. The least that we can do is give them our all-out support. None of us should sit by and let “someone else” do the job.
The future of the Democratic Party in Harford County depends upon the success of our candidates in the General Election. Their success depends upon our willingness to help them.FOR SHERIFF:

Confused GOP says
WAGNER OVER CRAIG?!?!?!? Has the Rt. 40 Republican Club and North Harford Republican Club lost its mind?!?!!?
I use to respect those two organizations…now I think they’re a joke! Seriously, there is so much politics within those two clubs that it’s not even funny.
It must be an anti- Craig thing…I noticed Randolf Craig was not endorsed for District 34-A either. Of the 4 Republican candidates running for that district R. Craig is the only person with a track record. I live in HdG and he’s our councilman. He’s done a really good job here in town. I will also support McGrady, he’s working hard. We need to get the two dems (James, Riley) out of the “do nothing district”. Time for change.
I’m glad I dropped out of the Rt. 40 Republican Club years ago! I don’t even know if they know whta being Republican means anymore? They seem too far right….if they get one of those “vote no on everything” Tea Party people down there in Annapolis, they’ll just be laughed at by our ONE PARTY STATE GOVERNMENT.
We need to consider who has the ability to work with both parties and get the job done for the betterment of our district. Bring the bucks back to Harford County. We have been the step child county of this current administration for too long.
Tom says
The Route 40 club is out of control. Craig is the only viable choice in the C.E. race.
Glen Glass in 34a was endorsed over R. Craig and John Paff. Have they ever met Glass?
Rick Grambo for School board. I am not sure that man has even ever read a book.
Dave Tritt and Jason Gallion for 35A. Is that a joke? The only thing that has come from that campaign is a twisted piece of spin trashing other candidate’s. Thats not helping my business which is failing in this climate.
Did I mention that the president of the North Harford Club was endorsed and he is also the chairman of slate with Tritt/Gallion? Sounds dirty to me.
Galloping Ghost says
Who is Glen Glass?
Another Political Critic says
Glen Glass is the one who ILLEGALLY (maybe he does fit in with the Route 40 club) places his yard signs on Route 40. He puts them on the median and other illegal places on Friday nights, this way the State DOT won’t be able to get them until Monday morning. He also parks his truck at the park-and-ride and leaves it there, can’t recall which one off the top of my head.
BSMan says
Glass leaves his junk truck on the lot at 95 and Mountain Road, taking a parking spot from people who need it. Sheets or his people are also putting signs along the roadside where ever they want. I won’t vote for anyone who wants to enact or enforce the laws, but make exceptions for themselves.
Lilt50 says
Sheets has a sign on Bel Air High Property. Hopefully the voters notice “unauthorized” locations.
Rebecca Weir Nelson says
Nelson’s political signs are biodegradable; and will not polute our environment like the other political signs!

Phil Dirt says
Apparently, Nelson also likes to refer to herself in the third person.
BSmeter says
Nelson’s political signs are also barely visible and look to be printed from an inkjet at home that is mostly out of ink. Not a very good way to win a race in a district as rural as Senate 7 against a well-funded Republican candidate with signs at every corner. Signs do not vote, but they can certainly take votes away if the signs make you look like an non-viable candidate!
Cdev says
He used to park it at 95 and 24 until it got called in several times and he got love letters on his windshield.
Shelly says
McGrady certainly gets my vote for Delegate. He has demonstrated that he is willing to work HARD for his constituents (not for himself like the current incumbents), knows how to efficiently run a business (unlike the career politician and cartoon character currently in office), will bring the sense of sanity we need in Annapolis to create more jobs and lower taxes, and he is a cutie! =]
Self Denial says
Shelly: AKA Pat McGrady
Shelly says
Hahaha, funny! I love the assumptions people make when others post positive things in regards to candidates they support.
Patrick McGrady says
Nope, wasn’t me. I do intend to work hard though- and make sure Maryland gets back on track!
KMLTOE says
McGrady is OK….but he has to learn to work hard for HIMSELF. I saw hime twice over the summer and both times he was campaigning for someone else. At the Bel Air BBQ Bash he had an Andy Harris shirt on…nothing else, just Andy Harris. He had NO McGrady signs or stickers on him. Next time I saw him he was campaigning for Erhlich. McGrady: Campaign for yourself and your constituents…let the big dogs fend for themselves. Worry about your job and your job only. Do not get beholden to any politician or group. You still have my vote, but you need to run solo.
sad but true says
Crazy that people think McGrady is better than james and Riley.
Both have decreased taxes for seniors and James has brought money back while chair of the appropriatons committee, and Riley has worked hard for education and the hotel tax, which will help ease the berden on taxes for the people of Aberdeen.
We need to keep who we have, and keep the tea party out of the capital!
WHAT??? says
What money has James EVER brought back to Harford county? Please elaborate.
An Old Harford county resident says
The hotel tax is not a good tax. It increases fees and the funds do not stay in Aberdeen, or Harford county. It is a bad idea. Del. Riley does not answer phone calls, request permission to place his signs on individual home owner’s property and is basically not effective at responding to constituent questions.
Del. James does not need to “bring back” ear marks for Harford county if she can reduce the amount of funds taken from MD citizens already, ie. increased mva fees, parking fees, road tolls et al.
An Oldtime Harford county-ite says
Patrick McGrady will work for his constituents as he has shown he can be both a team player and independent. He has the energy and the creativity to generate new and productive ideas for the benefit of all.
He has shown that he can be a team player, working with the other conservative members, ie. Nancy Jacobs, Bob Erlich, Andy Harris,Jason Gallion and Dave Tritt, as well as coming up with speeches to ensure an honest and entertaining explanation of state issues for the Campaign for Liberty meetings, and practicing and performing with the Bay Country Gentlemen. This up and coming star has my vote.
Rebecca Weir Nelson says
Most of the fees you mentioned were the old Govs..
Drivers license went from $6.00 to $30.00. etc…
He priced Maryland out of reach, for alot of Marylanders.
We cannot afford more!
Cdev says
Funny I call Dan Riley at his office number and he replies. He also seems to use his facebook account and will be responsive. You might not be dialing the correct number. I do seem to have a problem getting Pat McDonough or Andy Harris to reply unless I call Pat’s Radio show. Then he hangs up when you don’t agree with him!
Another Political Critic says
You too can be endorsed by the North Harford Republican and Route 40 Republican Clubs, all you have to do is sell your self out as a vote to make Imp. the leader of the Harford County Delegation!!!
Tom says
No surprise there. Impallaria is behind all dirty politics in Harford. Tritt, Gallion, and Magrady are pawns in his plot. Everyone in Harford should be advised not to vote for Imp and his accomplices(listed above).
Another Political Critic says
I made sure I took down the Central Committee names as a list of people NOT to vote for.
They are as delusional as the Harford Democrat Club if they think that half of their candidates get into office.
John Henkel says
Regarding the HCEA endorsements, they stated that “All candidates from all parties are invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their views on public education, nothing else.”
Unfortunately, I never received any communication from HCEA regarding my candidacy and views on public education (of which I have many).
Dan Decker says
And you are surprised? I mean, they are doing their typical routine. The incumbent likes to keep the status quo. That agrees with them. Just my opinion, but if it walks like a duck…
Ashley Norman says
My dad, Wayne Norman has also been endorsed by:
Maryland Farm Bureau
Maryland Right to Life
Maryland Chamber Of Commerce
Please see his “Endorsements” Page on his website, to see a full list of endorsements as well as quotes from Gov. Bob Ehrlich and Sen. Barry Glassman, praising my dads hard work in Annapolis.

Recently Retired says
When reading the political endorsements by the Harford County Education Association I came upon the endorsement for Sheriff Jesse Bane. Knowing the history of the Sheriff I detected a discrepancy. That discrepancy is in his reported educational background. When I checked his website I was shocked to read the same educational background that he reported to the HCEA. It is my understanding that the candidates completed a questionnaire. The information is expected to be truthful. The Sheriff has for some reason misrepresented his educational background, both to HCEA and on his website. He is claiming a degree in Criminology (which is different from Criminal Justice) when in fact his degree is in Sociology (Maryland ’72.) The fact is he has no advanced degree or certificate in Criminal Justice. Not once in the past 38 years has he elected to pursue an advanced degree. Does he not know his own educational background, or is he deliberately misrepresenting his academics?
This reminded me of George O’Leary who was the Head Coach of Notre Dame Football. He resigned after it was discovered he lied about his academic background. O’Leary had claimed that he received a master’s degree from New York University in 1972. His statement: “Due to a selfish and thoughtless act many years ago, I have personally embarrassed Notre Dame, its alumni and fans…”
This was a football coach who was held accountable for his unethical behavior. He was not associated in any way with law enforcement. In this country we hold our law enforcement officials to a higher standard. This is necessary for the citizens to trust their police officers. Without trust effective police/community relations cannot exist.
I don’t believe this was a mistake by the Sheriff since he has misrepresented his academics at least twice.
I have verified three of the other candidates (Bodway, Gahler and Meckley) running for Sheriff have a Master of Science degree in Management from Johns Hopkins University (Police Executive Leadership Program.) I was not able to verify an advanced degree for Roger Sheets but he makes no claim or misrepresentation on his website or in public.
These are facts and I encourage anyone to check this information as I have done. I am in the academic field and witness such false claims on job applications all too often. The issue here is more that a lie on a job application but rather our top law enforcement officer submitting false credentials to the public. Perhaps he can explain it or better yet do the honorable thing like Mr. O’Leary did and come clean.
Delegate B. Dan. Riley says
I have also been endorsed by the working men and women of the Maryland State and District of Columbia AFL-CIO, The Sierra Club, MD. Farm Bureau, United Transportation Union, Stonewall Democrats of Central Maryland, Equality MD., The Aegis, The Record, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, The Maryland Association for Justice, Harford County Education Association, and MD Shall Issue.
recently retired says
THere needs to be a clarification made to this story. This information is quoted form the HCEA web site regarding their endorsements:
“Political Recommendations
There aren’t many topics that get members as riled up as political endorsements. Below is the procedure HCEA follows to recommend a candidate.
· All candidates from all parties are invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their views on public education, nothing else.
· Having completed the questionnaire they are invited to be interviewed by HCEA’s government relations committee.
· Only after completing the previous steps can the committee vote to determine whether or not to recommend a candidate.
· The recommendations of the committee are passed on the HCEA Board for final approval and that information is shared with our members.
These are only recommendations, based on the candidates’ views/platform on public education, nothing else.”
The above line needs to be considered. The HCEA is endorsing Jesse Bane? For his views on education? Wow, Jesse could care less about education. He has falsified his own academic credentials and does not value advanced education in his own administration. He has never pursued an advanced degree and becomes hostile toward those who do. He feels threatened by educated people. It appears the HCEA did not do any homework to verify Banes’ experience and education.
Cdev says
See how Jesse Bane has helped get the Sherrifs office involved in schools, particularly in the Edgewood, Aberdeen and Joppatowne area.
recently retired says
This is a national trend to add School Resource Officers as budgets permit. Bane did not start the program. As usual he takes credit for others incentives.

I hope everyone will understand that the Rt 40 Club DID NOT ENDORSE any of the candidates on the list passed out in the name of the club. We need all of those who have left the club to rejoin and help us bring the club back to the bacis of the Republican Party. We need YOUR HELP.
