An Abingdon man was arrested Wednesday after authorities said he allegedly brought a handgun in his vehicle to a BB&T Bank branch in Fallston.
Samuel W. Skillman, 44, of Abingdon faces felony charges of possession of a handgun and transporting a handgun in a vehicle after Harford County Sheriff’s deputies found the weapon in his vehicle outside the bank branch just before noon on Wednesday.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the intersection of Bush Road and Timothy Drive in Abingdon to investigate a report of an armed person. A man at that location told deputies that Skillman had just left the residence carrying a 9mm handgun, and was upset about the manner in which the estate of Skillman’s father was being settled between his sister and himself. He was also allegedly upset about a change of the time of a meeting in the matter.
Deputies contacted Skillman’s wife, who allowed them to search their home for the weapon. The gun was not recovered, but according to the Sheriff’s report, a bag of marijuana was recovered.
Authorities then made contact with Skillman’s sister, who said she was at the bank branch with Skillman, who was unarmed. Skillman’s sister notified authorities when he stepped outside the building for a moment, and deputies detained Skillman and located a 9mm gun, a magazine containing six rounds, and a holster in his vehicle.
Skillman was taken into custody and posted $5,000 cash bond, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
