From Harford County government:
County Executive David R. Craig, joined by members of his cabinet and many of the County’s elected officials, today formally dedicated the Veronica “Roni” Chenowith Activity Center in Fallston. The 29,760 square foot facility will house a variety of programs for citizens of all ages, and for seniors in particular.
The facility is operated through a partnership between the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Office on Aging in the Department of Community Services. The architectural firm of Edmeades and Stromdahl designed the facility, while Wohlsen Construction was responsible for building the center.
Speaking about the importance of the new building, County Executive Craig stated, “This facility will significantly improve the quality of life for area residents, and particularly for our seniors. Seniors are the most rapidly increasing demographic in our county, and soon there will be as many seniors as there are students in our public schools.”
“Roni Chenowith cared so much for the residents in this area, and especially for seniors and youth involved in recreation programs,” Craig added. “She worked hard to see that this project came to fruition, and while it is sad that she could not be here today to see it, there could not be a more fitting way to carry on her legacy.”
In addition to County Executive Craig, words of dedication were delivered by Director of Parks and Recreation Arden C. McClune, Director of Community Services Mary Chance, Former Director of Parks and Recreation Joseph Pfaff, County Councilman Joseph Woods, State Senator Andrew Harris, and Maryland Secretary of Aging Gloria Lawlah.
Also giving remarks was Joseph Chenowith, Sr., who gave an emotional tribute to his late wife, and thanked all who helped see that the facility was completed. Following the remarks, a portrait of the late Mrs. Chenowith was unveiled in the building’s vestibule that was painted by artist Jim Butcher. Commissioned by Harford United Charities, the portrait shows Mrs. Chenowith at work, seated at the dais of the Harford County Council.
The center has a wide variety of facilities available, including a gymnasium, fitness room, billiards, meeting spaces, and lounge areas, as well as a bocce court and other outdoor recreation areas.
