From Harford County government:
County Executive David R. Craig was presented with the “County Cup” on behalf of the citizens of Harford County in a ceremony on July 12, 2010 in Bel Air. The County Cup is bestowed upon the home county of the first Marylander to finish the Maryland Half Marathon. The winner of this year’s race, held on May 23 in the Timonium area, was Matt Klaschus of Street.
The Maryland Half Marathon, started in 2009, is held annually to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. On hand to graciously transfer the County Cup was Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, who was in possession of the trophy because last year’s winner was from Monkton. Also in attendance for the County Cup presentation were event co-founders Michael Greenebaum and Jon Sevel, as well as Susan O’Connell, Associate Director of the University of Maryland Medical System Foundation, and Stewart Greenebaum.
In accepting the trophy, County Executive Craig remarked, “We are glad that we can be a part of such a worthy cause. There are not many families that haven’t been affected by cancer in some form, and the Greenebaum Cancer Center is recognized as a leader in treatment and research. I’m proud that so many Harford Countians joined runners from around the state in this effort, and I’m especially pleased that one of our own won.”
“I congratulate Matt for winning this year’s race,” County Executive Craig added. “I’m not planning on having to give the trophy up any time soon though, since I’m confident that Matt or another Harford Countian will win the race again next year.” For more information on the Maryland Half Marathon, visit www.mdhalfmarathon.com.
