IN THE WAKE

In the wake of Stephen Wright’s death I was stunned of the event and dismayed at what occurred afterword. I guess it is expected, as with any catastrophe the best and the worst is brought out in mankind. Although my and Stephen’s relationship started as political allies it eventually grew into a great friendship. I admired Stephen’s determination to stand up and fight for the things he believed in and was willing to give his all to achieve his goal. Shortly before his death I wrote a quote on my Face book page, ” LIFE IS BUT A GLEAM OF LIGHT BETWEEN TWO ETERNITIES.” When it became clear that no one was going to step up to keep that light shinning and to keep the torch burning I decided to act myself by announcing my intention to seek the office of Harford County Executive. I realize that if if am to succeed or fail in this endeavor it must be on my own merits. Although his memory will remain with me for my lifetime this writing will to put to rest my political relationship with him. I will do so with the following goodbye.

As I sat in the church listing to the eulogies the last words spoken before he was taken to his final resting place was a poem I had written. It sums up my relationship with Stephen Wright and I would like to share it with those of you who were not there to hear it.

ENDLESS JOURNEY

UPON THIS EARTH WE CAME JUST TRAVELERS PASSING THROUGH
TO A PLACE BEYOND THE SUNSET THAT WAS MADE FOR ME AND YOU

WHEN OUR LIFE UPON THIS EARTH IS OVER THE JOURNEY DOES NOT END
THERE’S SOMETHING FAR MORE BEAUTIFUL AND PRECIOUS THAT LIES JUST AROUND THE BEND

SO BEAUTIFUL I HEAR THAT I CANNOT COMPREHEND
BUT I KNOW ITS THERE AS I’VE BEEN TOLD FOR YOU AND I MY FRIEND

A PLACE WHERE THERES NO PAIN OR SORROW AND I CAN TELL YOU THIS
THAT WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND US WE WILL NEVER MISS

FOR ALL THE WONDERS OF THIS WORLD AND ALL THE LOVE WE’VE EVER KNOWN
WILL STAY WITH US FOREVER SO WE WILL NEVER BE ALONE

YES, ETERNAL LIFE WAS GRANTED BY OUR FATHER UP ABOVE
AND UNITED WE WILL BE WITH HIS UNDYING LOVE

SO TO YOU MY FELLOW TRAVELER WHO HAS LEFT ME BEHIND
THE DAY THAT WE WILL MEET ONCE MORE WILL STAY UPON MY MIND

TILL THE TIME IS COME FOR ME TO JOURNEY AROUND THE BEND
AND SEE THE SMILING FACE OF THE ONE I CALLED MY FRIEND.

Now it is time to say goodbye and my last words To my friend Stephen is…keep smiling till I see you around the bend and enjoy your new life.
