On Friday, May 7th from 7 – 9:30 p.m., Jim Donovan, award winning teacher, performer and multi-platinum recording artist will conduct an interactive and energizing drumming experience at the Havre de Grace Activity Center, 351 Lewis Lane, Havre de Grace, MD.
The workshop features participants learning rhythms, songs, chants and concepts from Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean. Musical experience is not a prerequisite and authentic African drums (djembes) will be provided for use during the program.
Professor Donovan was a founding member of the band, “Rusted Root” from 1990 to 2005. His music has been featured in major films, “Ice Age”, “Twister”, “Mathilda”, and on network television shows such as , American Idol, David Letterman, Conan ‘Brien, Party of Five and the PBS “Web of Life” documentary.
Ever desirous of sharing the power of rhythm firsthand, Donovan facilitates a series of corporate and university drumming programs and public drumming workshops throughout the U.S. and Europe. He is the director of the “Retreat for the Soul “in Ambialet, France, the “Summer Rhythm Renewal” in Loretto, PA, and “The Great Rhythm Revival” in Sherman, NY.
He received his BA in music from the University of Pittsburgh where he studied African Music with noted scholar Kwabena Nketia from Ghana. He has since performed and/or studied with various African master drummers including Congolese master drummer Elie Kihonia, Damien Pwonon, Mamady Keita and Etse Nyadedzor.
As a solo artist and teacher, Donovan has released 6 highly acclaimed CD’s. He was recently named “Drum Circle Facilitator of the Year” by the readers of “Drum!” magazine.

Rusted Root is a great band and it was a major loss when Jim left the band. His workshops are great learning events!
