Gov. Martin O’Malley will visit Aberdeen next week as part of the kick-off of his re-election campaign, three weeks to the day after his opponent Bob Ehrlich stopped in Bel Air.
O’Malley will speak at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 29 in Aberdeen Festival Park at 60 N. Parke Street in Aberdeen.
Before an audience of 250 earlier this month, Ehrlich called Harford an “essential county” in this year’s gubernatorial election, and said he believed he would need between 76 and 78 percent of the county’s votes in November.
O’Malley won’t be the only one ramping up their campaign, as the field for several local races has finally filled out in recent weeks:
–The Register of Wills race continues to grow with the filing of White Hall Republican Michael S. Birch. Birch jumps into the fray against Republican candidates Derek Hopkins of Pylesville, Robert Preston of Bel Air, Bill Schilling of Forest Hill and Merrie Street of Bel Air.
–Incumbent Republican state Sen. Barry Glassman has filed for office in District 35, to return to the seat to which he was appointed mid-term when Sen. Bob Hooper died.
–Incumbent Republican Del. Rick Impallaria of Joppa has filed for reelection in District 7. He faces opposition in the primary election from Jim Berndt of Baltimore and John Cromwell of Kingsville, both Republicans.
–Also in District 7, Democrat Rebecca Weir Nelson of Abingdon has filed to enter the race. She is currently the only Democrat who has filed for the seat.
–Incumbent Democratic Del. B. Dan Riley of Edgewood has filed for reelection in District 34A. Riley joins Democrat Marla Posey-Moss of Aberdeen and Republicans Glen Glass of Aberdeen, Patrick McGrady of Aberdeen, and John M. Paff Jr. of Abingdon as those who have filed to run for the district’s two seats.
–Incumbent Republican Del. Wayne Norman has filed to return to the District 35A seat to which he was appointed upon Glassman’s ascension to the state senate. Norman already faces primary election opposition from Republicans Jason Gallion of Churchville and Dave Tritt of Bel Air. Democrats Joseph Gutierrez of Jarrettsville and John Jones of Bel Air have also filed their candidacy for the two District 35A seats.
–Frequent Democratic candidate Jack T. Feldman of Bel Air has filed his candidacy for the Harford County Council District C seat. He faces no competition in the primary presently and seeks to unseat Republican Councilman Jim McMahan, who has already filed for reelection.
–Former gubernatorial candidate Ellen Sauerbrey will deliver the keynote address at a breakfast fundraiser for state senate candidate Al Redmer Jr., scheduled for Thursday, April 29, at 7:30 a.m. at the Mountain Branch Gold Club in Joppa. Tickets are $125 per person and the public is invited.
Redmer is a candidate for the 7th District seat of state Sen. Andy Harris, who is challenging Frank Kratovil for the U.S. House of Representatives 1st District seat. Sauerbrey is the chair of Harris’ Congressional campaign.
–For that campaign, Harris has raised $324,382 in the first quarter of this year, according to his campaign. The amount brings Harris’ total amount raised for the 2010 election cycle to nearly $1.1 million.
“I am honored that so many people believe in my record of fiscal responsibility,” Harris said in a statement. “This campaign is about strengthening our economy, creating jobs for struggling Marylanders, and restoring fiscal responsibility in Washington. The tremendous support I continue to receive is critical to our success.”
–One more bit of Harris news: he will hold a day-long bus tour across the 1st District on Friday, April 23 beginning at 8 a.m. Details on the planned stops are available at Harris’ Web site.
–District 34 candidate Patrick McGrady will hold a wine tasting fundraiser on Saturday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mount Felix Vineyard and Winery in Havre de Grace.
Brian Young says
Andy Harris’ Bus Tour will come to Harford County this Saturday, April 24 at 1:05 p.m. at Forest Hill Lanes. Everyone is invited to help Dr. Harris start his campaign after the end of the 2010 General Assembly session.

what a joke on owemalleys aberdeen rally.. He is so embarrassed that not a word on the news. Only ones there were protestors, his many very large body guards in suits and state workers who looked like they’d rather be at their desks. All my ex co-workers. lol. fyi, NOT OMALLEY SUPPORTERS

Here are some questions that Harford county residents might want to address to Gov. O’Malley if given the opportunity:
The tax rate on sales…where did it go? What about the increase in court costs for traffic and small claims? What about the buses and the local transportation fees? What about the increase in tuition for state colleges? Why are so many new fees being raised and added to the cost of homes, senior centers and day cares? The increased costs of beer, soda and alcohol, as well as cigarettes and cigars, were to go for what purposes? Where have the funds been used in Harford county and to what end? If Gov. OMalley is here to campaign, shouldn’t he have the answers to the expenses that he incurred as Gov. in our state? What did he do to earn our vote as the next gov. of MD? I have written several letters and did not get responses from either he or his Lt. Gov. Brown, I have not gotten answers from Sen. Mikulski or Sen. Cardin on other issues, ie. Health care reform or Cap and Trade issues. It is a serious problem when the elected officials do not acknowledge the people who they represent…maybe someone else will get an answer at the rally on Thursday, Apr. 27 at ll:00am at Festival Park in Aberdeen.
Cdev says
Toby,
Joe would tell you to give them another chance. I say don’t vote for them. Politicians should be responsive to their consistituants. Alas Cardin is not running this time around.
Joseph Caruso says
Cdev –
Yes Toby should press for an answer to his concerns.

If you try asking questions like that I would bet that you don’t get to attend the entire rally. Events like this are opportunities for the royalty to come and get the adoration of the peasants. He will not and probably can not answer question like that.
B.S. Detector! says
I’m certain that Governor O’Malley has a legitimate answer to all of your questions. You may not AGREE with some of his answers, but knowledge of the issues (not knee-jerk reactions) really goes a long way to fully understanding why decisions are made. That being said, some of your questions are not relevent. Case in point….I know for a fact that the alcohol tax has not been increased. Therefore, if the price of “beer, soda and alcohol” has increased (as you claim), it would have nothing to do with the state government, etc. I don’t know about the following, but the same could probably be said regarding local transportation fees, the cost of homes, day care and senior centers. I hope that Governor O’Malley has the chance to answer these, and ANY questions that are on the minds of the citizens of Maryland. As I said earlier, knowledge goes a long way to fully understand why decisions are made.
Toby says
BS- if it is accurate that the alcohol tax has not risen, I am corrected, however, the fact that the sales tax did rise, that raised the costs of alcohol, soda and beer, groceries, medicine and pet food, too.
I do not agree w/ many of Gov.OMalley’s ideas, but I do try to show respect for all people. All of the other costs rise when any sales tax is added, but the other costs mention rose w/ specific tax increases by the state of MD, which the gov. signed. I am trying to understand why and where the funds generated for the specific areas were sent, to which facility or county. The knowledge you speak of is at best difficult to attain from the MD government.
B.S. Detector! says
Toby….understood, and like I said in post 2.3, Governor O’Malley would be able to answer each of your questions. Now….how do we get them to him in a way that he has the opportunity to respond?
