From the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County:
On April 22, 2010 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County will hold the 20th Annual Youth Recognition Event at the Steak and Burger Dinner at the New Life Center at Mt. Christian Church, Joppa, Maryland. More than 300 people attend this event, designed to recognize the accomplishments of youth from the Harford County Clubs in Aberdeen, Bel Air, Edgewood and Havre de Grace. Thanks to corporate supporters like Outback Steak House, local supporters will be able to dine with the children and teens that have benefited from the programs offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs and learn more about the Clubs. Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps is key note speaker and Baltimore Orioles broadcaster Jim Hunter will be serving as the Masters of Ceremonies.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County is one of the six chosen to participate in a national pilot of the Michael Phelps Foundation im program. The im program offers water safety courses, recreational pool activities, world-class swim training and related dry land instruction, as well as health and wellness education. The Boys & Girls Club of Harford County was awarded a $30,000 grant to implement the program in the spring and fall.
The evening will honor Kecia Haggins a true example of an extraordinary young woman as the 2010 Harford County Youth of the Year. At age 17, a junior at Havre de Grace High School, she has just been selected and competed against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County.
“Being a part of the Boys & Girls Clubs has changed my life forever. It has given me the chance to become a leader and a role model for others. I have become a better person because of my involvement in the Club.” Haggins said.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive.
The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.
Seating is limited. Individuals can attend the event for $50.00 or participate as a corporate sponsor for $300.00 per table of 6. Additional sponsorship opportunities are also available for the event.
