From the Harford County Council of PTAs:
Harford County consists of 47 local PTA units with over 11,000 members. It is time to take action concerning the Harford County budget. Executive Craig is now formulating the 2011 budget to be given to the Harford County Council by April 1, 2010. Now is the time for PTA members to let the county executive know that we want our children’s education fully funded. The students in Harford County are our future and we must invest in the future today. Email Executive Craig and let him know that PTA is the voice of the children in Harford County. We need the Harford County Public Schools budget fully funded. You can email the executive at CountyExecutive@harfordcountymd.gov
Take action today!

How about giving them more then they sked for?
Sandy says
I don’t think we all should just blindly ask that the school board’s budget be fully funded. To comment on the budget you have to read it first and see what is in it. I bet there are quite a few things some may disagree with and not want funded. Let’s judge each item on it’s own merit or requirement by law instead of blindly saying to spend our money on whatever they want.
Phil Dirt says
That’s exactly right, Sandy. Simply throwing more money at things without scrutinizing the need is what has gotten us into the financial mess we’re in now.
And good ol’ Cdev wants to redistribute even more of everyone else’s wealth…
Cdev says
I have read it but to be honest it is a matter of law that the BOE budget request must be funded as is since it is flat. So the council will claim I funded the BOE budget request and omit the fact that they had to do so.
Sandy says
Cdev, I don’t think that’s right. The County Council isn’t obligated to fund whatever the board of Ed asks for.
Cdev says
In this case they are. The board asked for the same amount as last year. Maintenence of Effort requires the Council say yes unless granted a waiver by MSDE, which they are highly unlikely to get.
Sandy says
Cdev, thanks for the explanation, I didn’t know that.
Cdev says
That is why I am not enthusiastic of those that jump up and down and act like “I funded them fully” when fully is what they re required to do in this cse. If they want to act like they re helping let them say they improved an increase, with due dillegence to the line items. I suspect the BOE asked for the sme amount this year because they where told that was all they would get and not to aask for more money and put the county councilman in a position of saying NO to education!
Lorrie says
I think that the budget should be fully examined before the council “fully funds” it. I am sure that there is still a good deal of fluff that can be cut out of their budget that could keep the teachers pay and eliminate the possibility of the BOE closing any schools at the same time they are building others because of “overcrowding”. The council should not be placed in a position that they have to fully fund the budget if the BOE is not being responsible.
