Friends,
I hope all of you are prepared for the coming snow. If you are a resident of Harford County, the information line for storm updates will open at 5pm this evening. The number is (410)838-5800. If you are a resident of Cecil County, there is not a storm tips line; however, the number for Cecil County Emergency Services is (410)996-5350. Last week I updated you all on some of my legislative priorities. I received a lot of feedback asking what I was doing for the veterans in our community. I’d like to share with you just a few of the bills I am sponsoring to honor and assist veterans in our State.
Increasing the Tax Break: I am a sponsor of House Bill 1, a bill that I have supported for the last several years and will continue to support until its successful passage. This legislation would allow for a tax exemption on the first $10,000 earned through military retirement income. Currently, in Maryland we only exempt $5,000 and I know we can do better for our veterans.
Helping Veteran Owned Businesses: I am sponsoring House Bill 359, a bill that would create a goal of awarding a portion of state contracts to Veteran owned businesses. This would help the individuals who have sacrificed so much get their businesses off the ground and aid them in integrating back into their daily lives as Marylanders.
Recognizing Veterans’ Day as a Holiday: Currently, schools in Maryland are open on Veteran’s Day. This prevents children from attending community events to honor veterans and learn about all of the sacrifices they have made to protect our country. Delegate Dan Riley and I would like to see Veteran’s Day recognized by our younger generations. This is especially important as our children grow up in a time of war.
If there are other veteran related bills, or other legislation, that you would like me to support please let me know. I enjoy reading how my constituents feel about the legislation before the General Assembly. As always, call or email my office with any questions or concerns; or, find me on facebook and send me a message! http://www.facebook.com/marydulanyjames
Please be safe in the snow and only drive if absolutely necessary.
Very Truly Yours,
Mary-Dulany James
