From the office of Del. Mary-Dulany James:
January 29, 2010
Friends,
Today marks the end of the third week of session. It has been a busy week full of hearings, legislation, and meeting with colleagues and constituents. I am happy to announce that I have submitted some key pieces of legislation for this year. You can find the list of bills I am sponsoring by clicking here.
Real Estate Taxes: I will be sending this press release next week but I wanted all of you to see it first:
Delegate James introduces legislation to help property owners battle unfair real estate taxes.
Annapolis- February 1, 2010-. Delegate Mary-Dulany James is sponsoring the following 3 bills that could bring tax relief to property owners:
· The first is a bill that will require the property tax appeals board to take the value of the property at the time of appeal, rather than the time of assessment. This is much better for the homeowner as it uses real-time market conditions to determine assessed value.
· The second real estate tax related legislation will change the assessment cycle to yearly, rather than every three years. This will help homeowners as property values change on a revolving basis due to the economy.
· While the Delegate’s preference is that the first two bills pass, she is sponsoring a bill that forces people to reevaluate the way real property taxes are determined. This will make it easier to make changes that help the people at home in the coming years.
“We all know that the real property taxes are the most regressive tax, having no relationship to a person’s income” said Delegate James “Those of us in Annapolis need to provide real tax relief to the people back home.”
Child Predators: I am a sponsor of several bills that will improve public safety for our children. Protecting children from sex offenders is important and I am sponsoring bills that will remove “good time” credits that allow sex offenders to leave jail early and strengthen our sex offender registry.
Scholarships: We are in the second half of the school year! That means it is time to start completing FAFSA applications and applying for scholarships. Please go to www.marydulanyjames.com for the application and guidelines for the Delegate Mary-Dulany James District 34A scholarship.
