HAGERSTOWN, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team picked up where it left off in 2008—winning. The Fighting Owls (1-0, 1-0 MDJUCO) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 matches over two seasons after going a perfect 10-0 in 2008 and downing the Hawks (0-1, 0-1 MDJUCO), 8-1, on Monday.
Sophomores Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Megan Heagy (Fallston, Md./Fallston/Towson) led Harford with two wins each as they combined to win the No. 2 doubles match, 8-6, over Jessi Kissner and Brittany Smetzer with Tiburzi taking the No. 2 singles match over Kissner, 6-1, 6-3 and Heagy defeating Katie Mann, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles slot.
Head coach George Budelis named Tiburzi the player of the match after she won her first foray in the No. 2 spot, while playing in the No. 5 position during her freshman year in 2008.
Harford swept the singles matches and dropped only one doubles match as freshman Julie Vuncannon (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and sophomore Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) dispatched Mann and Jill Watson, 8-0 at No.3 doubles and sophomore Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and freshman Katie Sampayo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) fell to Amanda Jenkins and Chris Kanter, 8-5 in the No. 1 spot.
Sherinsky defeated Jenkins in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), while sophomore Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford) was victorious at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 over Kanter, sophomore Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) defeated Smetzer, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot and Sampayo downed Watson, 6-1, 6-3 at No.5 singles.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Friday when they host their first home match against Mercer at 3:30 p.m. before welcoming teams this weekend for the Harford Invitational Tournament.
