SEWELL, N.J.—The Harford women’s tennis team began the 2009 season on Wednesday at Gloucester in Sewell,N.J., but had to suspend the match due to rain. At the time of suspension, the Roadrunners were ahead, 2-1 after claiming both the No.1 and No. 2 doubles matches, but Harford held an edge in all singles matches but two.
Freshman Julie Vuncannon (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and sophomore Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) claimed the lone point for the Fighting Owls in the No. 3 doubles slot, 8-4, while the No. 1 duo of sophomores Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) fell 9-7 and sophomores Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford) and Megan Heagy (Fallston, Md./Fallston/Towson) were dispatched, 8-6, in the No. 2 spot.
Brewer, Heagy and Vuncannon all led their respective singles matches in the No. 3, 5 and 6 spots, while sophomore Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) was up in the No. 3 spot and Sherinsky and Tiburzi were down in the top two slots.
The match will be played to completion prior to the second match of the season for the two teams, scheduled for October 14 at Harford. The match has been moved up to 3:00 p.m. to account for the continuation.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Friday when they kick-off MDJUCO conference play with a 2:30 p.m. match at Cecil.
