Harford Softball Drops Doubleheader to League-Leading Catonsville

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford softball team dropped a doubleheader, 8-1 and 12-3, to conferece-leading CCBC-Catonsville on Thursday at Harford Softball Field.

The Fighting Owls (7-21, 5-7 MDJUCO) kept things close in both games, before giving up five- and seven-run innings, respectively as they fell to the Cardinals (20-5, 8-0 MDJUCO).

Harford was down by two, 3-1, after three innings and after three scoreless innings for both teams gave up five in the seventh on the way to the game one loss and even held a 3-2 lead in after two innings in game two. Catonsville would take back the lead with two runs in the third to make the score 4-3, still manageable for the Owls, but a seven-run fourth gave the Cardinals the eight-run lead they would need to maintain after five for the mercy win.

Sophomore Jourdan Harmon (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) was the only Owl player with two hits on the day, as she went 2-for-5 at the plate and reached base once on a walk. Sophomore Cherish Deaver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and freshman Audrey Werneke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) had the only extra-base hits for the Owls, with Deaver tallying an RBI double in game one and Werneke adding a three-run RBI triple in game two.

Freshman Sarah Cooley (4-9) (Clermont, Fla./Bel Air) was tabbed with the game loss after giving up eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits in seven innings, while sophomore Katie Irwin (3-12) (Edgewood, Md./Harford Tech) allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in four innings of work in game two.

Megan Gravell led the Cardinals, going 5-for-8 on the day with two runs scored, two doubles and three RBI ,while Desirae Sullivan was 4-for-5 with four runs scored, a double, a home run and five RBI.

Michelle Asbury (7-2) picked up the game one win after pitching a one-run, five-hit gem, striking out two in seven innings and Shannon Strube(8-1) earned the second win by allowing three runs on five hits in five innings.

The Cardinals started things off with a two-run homer by Sullivan in the top of the first, but the Owls would cut the lead to one with one run of their own in the bottom of the second off an RBI double by Deaver that plated freshman Sarah Morrill (Smyrna, Tenn./C. Milton Wright).

Catonsville would make it a two-run lead in the third as Sloane VanMeter led-off with a double before scoring on an Owl error while trying to turn a double play.

After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals would add their final runs in the top of the seventh, scoring five off an RBI single by Jess Richards, RBI double by Gravell, RBI single by Katie Blackston and a two-run Owl error on the way to the 8-1 win.

Game two saw Catonsville tally two in the second, off an RBI single by Blackston and a passed ball that allowed Richards to score to take a 2-0 lead, but Harford would add three of its own in the second off a two-out, bases-clearing triple by Werneke.

The Cardinals would tie things up in the third with a sacrifice fly by Sullivan and would take a one-run lead on an RBI double from Gravell before taking a comfortable, 11-3 advantage with a seven-run fourth inning.

VanMeter started the scoring off with an RBI double, before Sullivan notched a two-run, bases-clearing RBI double, Blackston added an RBI single, Megan Heins tacked on a two-run RBI double and Blackston scored on an Owl error before Harford finally got out of the inning.

Cooley would enter in the fifth and give up one final run, on an RBI single by Gravell, as Catonsville rolled to the 12-3, five-inning win.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Saturday when they host Hagerstown in a doubleheader at the Harford Softball Field at 12:00 p.m.
