From the HCC sports desk:
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford baseball snapped a three-game winning streak as it fell, 7-2, to Anne Arundel on Thursday night at Harford Baseball Field. The Fighting Owls (20-13, 10-7 MDJUCO) saw themselves down 4-0 to the Pioneers (24-12, 13-6 MDJUCO) before adding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Owls out-hit the Pioneers, 9-8, but stranded seven runners, including three in the fifth as they fell.
Freshmen Willie Barnola (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/UEC J.G. Bastidas) and Simon Beloff (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter/Old Dominion) had the only extra-base hits for the Owls, both doubles, while freshman Brendon Meyers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) was 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored and a stolen base.
Freshman Cory Grossman (2-3) (Dundalk, Md./Kenwood) was tabbed with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out four in 4.2 innings of work.
Brandon Browne led Anne Arundel, going 1-for-2 on the day with a double, three RBI, and reached base three times on walks, while Shane Schulze pitched the nine-inning, complete-game win, giving up just two runs on nine hits while fanning five batters.
The Pioneers jumped to a quick, 2-0, lead in the first off an RBI double from Browne and RBI single by Alan Shandrowski, and, after three scoreless innings for both teams, would add two more in the fifth on bases-loaded walk by Browne and RBI single from Roberto Mendoza to take a comfortable, 4-0 lead.
Freshman Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) would lead off the fifth with a single, followed by Meyers who did the same to put two men on and no outs on the board. After a bunt pop-out, freshman Dean Hicks (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) would reach on a fielder’s choice bunt that caught Otstot at third and a single from Barnola would load the bases for Harbach who brought in a run by drawing a hit by pitch to put the Owls on the board.
Freshman Dustin Morgan (Berryville, Pa./Clark County/Wilmington), who entered for the final out of the fifth, would shut down the Anne Arundel lineup in order, before Beloff tacked on a one-out double and advanced to third on Ostot’s single before scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 4-2.
Morgan retired the lineup in order once again in the seventh, but Harford would strand two runners in the bottom of the inning before freshman Bo Loar (Fallston, Md./Fallston) came into relief in the eighth. Loar would put two men on, including Browne who stole a base and advanced on a passed ball to get into scoring position, but would come out of the inning unscathed.
The same could not be said for freshman Brian Heilig (Lykens, Pa./Upper Dauphin) who gave up one hit, hit one batter, and walked another to load the bases before freshman Ryan Schaeffer (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) inherited his runners on the mound. Schaeffer saw one run score on a groundout and loaded the bases after hitting a Pioneer batter before walking in Heilig’s second runner, followed by a fielder’s choice RBI. Harford finally got out of the inning as Schaeffer fanned the final batter, but the damage was done as Anne Arundel took a 7-2 lead.
Schulze struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth on the way to the Anne Arundel victory.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Friday when they travel to conference-rival CCBC-Catonsville for a single, nine-inning game at 2:00 p.m.
