From the HCC sports desk:
HAGERSTOWN, Md.—The Harford baseball team won its second and third straight as it swept Hagerstown, 4-3 and 9-7, in a doubleheader on the road on Friday.
The Fighting Owls (20-12, 10-6 MDJUCO) have won eight of their last nine games, as well as eight of their last nine conference games, while the Hawks (25-9, 8-6 MDJUCO) snapped a five-game winning streak with the doubleheader setback.
Freshman Brendon Meyers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) was clutch on the mound for Harford, picking up two saves on the day while pitching 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit while fanning two batters in two appearances. Freshmen Mike Rappazzo (3-1) (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Chris Peacher (3-2) (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) earned the day’s wins for Harford.
Freshman Simon Beloff (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter/Old Dominion) led the offensive effort for the Owls, going 3-for-5 on the day with two runs scored, a double, a triple and four RBI. Beloff also reached base an additional time with a walk, notched a sacrifice fly and slugged 1.200 for the day.
Matt Greene led the Hawks on the day, going 3-for-7 with three runs scored, a double, two homers, a sac fly and four RBI, while Kyle Briggs and Tim Ponn were tabbed with the day’s losses.
Harford took a 4-0 lead into the fifth thanks to two runs in both the second and fourth off an RBI triple by freshman Mike Krider (State College, Pa./State College), sacrifice fly by sophomore Chazz Losito (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove/Wilmington), RBI double from freshman Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) and a sac fly by Beloff.
The Hawks would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a sac fly from Greene and would threaten in the bottom of the seventh as Kameron Armacost tallied a two-out single before Greene slugged one of his two homers, this time a two-run affair, to put the Hawks within one, 4-3. Meyers entered the game for Harford with the tying run at the plate and, after Dan Heatwole singled and stole second, walked John Barrett to put the winning run on base before getting out of the inning with the 4-3 Harford win and his third save of the season.
Game two saw the teams evenly matched from the start, as the Owls tallied a run in the first off an RBI double by freshman Joe Harbach (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) before Greene led-off the bottom of the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, which allowed Heatwole to plate him with a sac fly to center to knot the score at one.
The Hawks would take a brief, 2-1, lead with an RBI single from Barrett in the third, but Harford would answer with three runs during the top of the fourth off an RBI single by Beloff, groundout RBI from Otstot, and an RBI single by freshman Dean Hicks (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) to take a 4-2 advantage over the Hawks.
The lead was short-lived for the Owls as well, with the Hawks adding two runs in the bottom of the inning and both teams would score two in the fifth to knot the score at six runs apiece going into the sixth inning.
Harford would take its final lead in the sixth with three runs, off an RBI single by freshman Woody Wlodarczyk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), and a two-run RBI double by Beloff, to hold a 9-6 advantage over the Hawks.
Greene would notch his second home run of the day in the bottom of the inning, but Meyers would enter the game in the seventh and strike out the first two batters before the third flew out to leftfield to pick up his second save of the day and cement the 9-7 win for Harford.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Tuesday when they continue their roadstand with a single game at CCBC-Catonsville slated for 3:00 p.m.
