ABERDEEN, Md.—The Harford golf team opened the 2009 season with a 310 forfeit win over Frederick on a frigid, snow-flurried Tuesday at Ruggles Golf Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The Fighting Owls (1-0) were led by sophomore Tony Tiburzi (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco), who shot a 75 on the day.
Tiburzi shot a 39 on the way out, with a birdie on holes three and nine, before scoring an even 36 on the back nine, as he birdied the 18th. Freshman Anthony Vincenti (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) finished just behind Tiburzi with a 76 for the round, shooting 38 on both the front and back nine and birdieing holes six and nine.
Sophomore Chris Appel (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) and freshman Mike Tavik (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) rounded out the Harford scoring with a 79 and 80, respectively, with Tavik recording two birdies, while the Cougars (0-1) two man team shot an 88 and a 103.
The Fighting Owls match originally scheduled for Thursday at Garrett has been postponed due to accumulated snowfall in the McHenry, Md. area and the make-up date is yet to be determined. Harford will return to competition on Monday, April 13 when they travel to Swarthmore College for the Swarthmore Invitational.
