BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Corning, as it played on its home field for the first time on Sunday at Harford Baseball Field.
The Fighting Owls (5-8) snapped a four-game winless streak with a 14-5 victory over the Red Barons (2-2) on Sunday afternoon. The first game of the day saw Corning pull out a 6-2 win after scoring one run in the fifth and adding three in the top of the sixth.
Freshman Joe Harbach (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) led the Owls on the day, going 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and one run scored and reaching base with two walks, including a perfect 4-for-4 in game two, while pitching two scoreless, one-hit innings in relief in the second half of the doubleheader, where he struck out two batters.
Sophomore Bryan Young (1-0) (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) picked up the day’s win, going 4.0 innings and allowing just four runs (two earned) on three hits and striking out two. Freshman Brendon Meyers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) also pitched in relief during game two, where he struck out the side in one inning of work.
Dan Telehany (1-0) led the Red Barons both at the plate and the mound as he was 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored and one batted in and also earned the game one complete-game win after fanning four batters and allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings.
Game one saw Harford take a 2-0 lead after single runs in the first and second innings, off RBI singles by Harbach and sophomore Ron Trout (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale), respectively.
Corning answered in the third with a leadoff walk by Aaric Ross, who advanced to second on Andrew Drum’s sacrifice bunt, then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error. The Red Barons evened the score in the fourth with some small ball tactics as both Doug Lewis and Eric Garvey singled to start the inning and were both advanced on a sac bunt by Jeremy Austin before Brett West’s RBI sac bunt plated Lewis to tie the score at two.
Corning wouldn’t take the lead until the fifth, where they added a single run, this time off an RBI single by Lewis, and would hold Harford hitless for the remainder of the game while adding three more runs in the sixth thanks to two Harford errors and a groundout RBI by Telehany to take the 6-2 win.
Game two saw the roles reversed, as Corning took the 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second, before the Owls rallied for six runs with two outs in the bottom of the second which was started by a leadoff walk from freshman Mike Maxwell (Salem, N.J./Woodstown) and fielder’s choice bunt by Meyers. Meyers stole second to get into scoring position before the Owls made their second out on a pop to second.
Freshman Ryan Schaeffer (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) started the scoring off with a double to left that plated Meyers and freshman Kyle Rooker (Coco Beach, Fla./Space Coast) walked before Harbach brought both runners home with a double to deep left for the Owls’ third run of the inning.
After freshman Woody Wlodarczyk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) walked, both he and Harbach advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch just before freshman Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) brought them home with a double to left center. After a Corning pitching change, freshman Mike Krider (State College, Pa./State College) batted Otstot in with a single to right, which brought Maxwell up to the plate for the second time in the inning. The first baseman reached base on a hit by pitch, but was stranded along with Krider as Harford finally made the final out, to take a 6-2 lead.
Corning cut into the Harford lead with two runs of its own in the third, but the Owls answered with two more runs in the fourth before the Red Barons tacked on their final run in the sixth, which also saw Harford tally another six runs in the bottom of the inning.
Schaeffer tallied the first RBI of the inning with a walk after the bases were loaded and with runners still manning the bags, Rooker added a bases-clearing double before freshman pinch hitter Mike Rapazzo (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) brought Rooker in with an RBI single and then scored on a Corning error on the way to the 14-5 Harford win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Baltimore to face Baltimore City in a 3:00 p.m. game.
