From the HCC sports desk:
NORTH EAST, Md.—The Harford baseball team lost its third straight as it dropped a doubleheader to Allegany, 13-0 (5 inn.) and 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at Cecil College. The Fighting Owls (4-7, 0-3 MDJUCO) were forced to relocate the game against the Trojans (9-2, 2-0 MDJUCO) due to ongoing field improvements at their home field.
Freshman Kyle Rooker (Coco Beach, Fla./Space Coast) led Harford, going 3-for-5 on the day, while freshman Dean Hicks (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) had the only extra base hit for the Owls for the second straight game.
Brad Kling led Allegany, going 6-for-8 on the day with four runs scored, one RBI and two doubles, while Ethan Newton was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI.
Freshmen Simon Beloff (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter/Old Dominion) and Chris Peacher (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) picked up the day’s losses and Ryan MacNamara and Chris Kechisen combined for the Trojans’ wins.
Beloff (0-1) gave up seven runs (four earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings of work during game one, while Peacher (1-2) allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out two in five innings in the game two outing. MacNamara (2-0) pitched five innings for the complete game shutout win, allowing just one hit and striking out six, while Kechisen (3-0) picked up the seven-inning complete game victory, allowing two runs (none earned) on eight hits and striking out three in the process.
The Trojans opened up scoring in the first in game one thanks to a sacrifice fly by Sam Watkins that scored Newton, but Harford’s troubles wouldn’t begin until the second, after MacNamara retired the Owl lineup in order.
Taylor Wheaton led off the inning by reaching base on an Owl error and was brought home on an RBI double by Kling. A single and steal by Luis Lopez followed by Cody Blickenstaff reaching on a hit by pitch would load the bases and Beloff would walk in two consecutive runs before AJ Czap grounded out to first for the first out of the inning, while also bringing Blickenstaff in to score. Watkins followed with sac fly that plated another Trojan runner before Jerry Lloyd added an RBI single for the sixth and final run of the inning as freshman Dustin Morgan (Berryville, Va./Clark County/Wilmington) entered in relief to notch the final out of the inning.
After retiring the Harford lineup in order once again, Allegany added four more runs in the third off a passed ball, RBI double by Blickenstaff, RBI single by Newton and sac fly by Czap to take an 11-0 lead.
Rooker tallied the Owls’ only hit of the game in the bottom of the third with a single up the middle and Hicks would reach base on an Allegany error, but both runners would be stranded at the end of inning.
Freshman Paul Labe (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) took the mound in the fourth and would give up three hits and two runs, both scored on Newton’s RBI single to left center, before finishing the inning with the Trojans up, 11-0.
Once again, the Owls would see themselves on the wrong side of a 1-2-3 inning and freshman Brian Bosley (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood), the fourth Harford pitcher, would enter the game in the fifth and pitch a scoreless, one-hit inning to give the Owls their last shot at the plate, where they would need four runs to keep the game alive.
Unfortunately for Harford, however, freshman Mike Krider (State College, Pa./State College) would be stranded after a leadoff walk on the way to the 13-0 loss.
Game two once again saw the Trojans take an early lead, this time two runs in the first, before Harford was retired in order.
One more Allegany run would cross the plate in the second, but, after Harford stranded one runner who reached on a Trojan error, both teams would remain scoreless in the third and Peacher would get out of the fourth unscathed to get to the bottom of the inning.
Two Allegany errors would put runners at first and second before sophomore Chazz Losito (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove/Wilmington) put the Owls on the board with an RBI single. Freshman Cory Grossman (Dundalk, Md./Kenwood) would add another RBI single with two outs on the board to put Harford within one, 3-2, after four innings of play.
Peacher would shut the Trojan offense down once again in the fifth, allowing just one hit, but Harford would strand two runners in its chance at the plate before freshman Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) entered the game in relief to start the sixth.
Otstot would give up a leadoff single, but struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning and give Harford another chance to tie or take the lead.
Sophomore Ron Trout (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) started things off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Grossman. A single by Rooker looked like it would score Trout for the tying run, but the Allegany right fielder launched a throw to the plate, where Trout was caught for the second out of the inning before a fly ball notched the final out.
Harford quickly saw itself with two outs in the top of the seventh, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Lopez, who batted in two runs with a single to center and after two wild pitches that allowed two more runs, the Owls saw themselves down by four, 7-2.
One batter reached base on a walk, but otherwise the Trojans quickly shut down Harford in the bottom of the seventh on the way to 7-2 win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Sunday when they host Corning for a doubleheader at Harford Baseball Field at 1:00 p.m. The game will mark the first time that the Fighting Owls play at their home field this season after the offseason improvements.
