Ah, the wearing of the green…the lads and lassies twirl about the parking lots and insane asylums with all manner of green apparel…
The little munchkins tromp out from under the Billy Goat Gruff’s lair…and the evil Troll casts spells far and wide…
Being Scots-Irish the coming weekend is a special event for me…not that I’m slowing down as age 70 approaches, but I’ve had to take in the reins a bit over the many years of celebrating my heritage and the heritage of anyone else at the bar…
Years of downing Jameson’s when it ran like water from a stream at bars in the 60’s and 70’s…free, if you were Irish…
Oh the headaches and lost vehicles…yes…forgetting where the car was parked…taken home by sympathetic ladies, nestled in their beds for the long evening after…when the right foot was extended from under the covers, to touch the floor to keep the bed from spinning…and then, sometimes, not all the time, it didn’t work.
Grandkids, of the Good Samaritans, who came by the bed with the stranger in it…and declared, “Nana, who is this in your bed?…Is it Santa?…Please, please let it be Santa!!!”
Leaving the loving care of good, kind-hearted folks, with full cups of coffee helping clear the head…walking to clear the head…stalking wherever had I left the car…were the keys in it…no, here they are
in my pocket.
Outside the famed Post Home, American Legion Post #39 along Hickory
Avenue in the illustrious but poorly governed county seat…ah, there is the little pewter-colored Isuzu ….my god, like finding a long, lost friend while traipsing along the boardwalk in Ocean City “Hon”….the car, the car, my kingdom for the car…the second biggest expense other than buying a home…and I’d found it…now, to the home, home at last, thank God Almighty, I’m home at last…
And hungry as hell…the coffee worked…now for some cabbage and
corned beef…there were plenty of great eateries back then who served up scrumptious platters of it for Saint Patrick’s Day…
Today, I wonder where the best serving of this traditional delicacy is to be found…is it Looney’s?…possibly…perhaps the Golden Corral in Aberdeen…
Not likely Five Guys and Fries, Red Robin or any of those ilks….
So, to each of you, Scots-Irish or not…good luck on finding good corned beef and cabbage this coming week…and if you perchance know in advance of the finest serving, at a good “Scots” price…comment here or forever hold your peace…
Schlange to one and all…and God Love the Irish…
HIRAM LODGEPOLE says
weill Mr. HOlden…you were at the very best place for corned beef and cabbage…the American Legion Post 39 on Hickory avenue…but you have to be a member, or know someone who can ‘sign you in ‘…it’s the best around for dinner on Saint Pat’s day…
and i ain’t foolin’ neither.

The American Legion in Bel Air is the best around for the price. It’s a tradition each year with my family to meet at the Legion and celebrate St. Patty’s Day. Good food and good people.

Wargo’s on Jarrettsville Road has some great CB&C.

I went to Mamie’s Cafe in Aberdeen for corned beef & cabbaged this past St. Patty’s Day and it was FANTASTIC! They cooked the cabbage RIGHT, and the corned beef was tender and juicy. They gave us extremely generous portions and included beverage & dessert all for around $8 person. This place is a real gem in Harford County.

I agree that it’s a gem, much better than some of the chains that surround it. Review have been favorable, including here on The Dagger Eats! – http://eats.daggerpress.com/restaurant/mamie%E2%80%99s-cafe-with-love/
