From the HCC sports desk:
SHALLOTTE, N.C.—The Harford baseball team won game two of a doubleheader on Sunday to finish with a 1-3 record as it completed its spring trip to Brunswick Community College. The Fighting Owls (4-4) led or were tied in each game that they lost, before the Dolphins came back to win.
Harford kicked off the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday which saw them take an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the fifth, where Brunswick’s Jeremy King tallied a three-run homer and both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game to give the Dolphins the 10-8 win.
Game two saw the teams tied at two runs apiece after the third inning, a score that would remain until the 12th inning, when Harford took a 3-2 lead off freshman Joe Harbach’s (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) RBI single that brought freshman Willie Barnola (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/UEC J.G. Bastidas) in to score, unearned. The Owls committed two errors to lead off the bottom of the inning, however, and a Dolphin steal put runners at second and third before Drew Alford added the game-winning two-RBI single on the way to the 4-3, extra-inning win.
Sunday’s doubleheader saw the Owls up, 4-2, in game one after four innings, but Harford surrendered four runs on five hits in the sixth as the Dolphins took a 6-4 lead. The Owls’ luck looked to be changing in the top of the seventh as freshman Woody Wlodarczyk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) tacked on a three-run shot to right to put Harford on top, 7-6.
Harford looked to be in good position for the win as Alford led off with a groundout to short and after a double by Ben Morris, Tyler Manrin struck out to give Harford its second out. The troubles began as Trey Euverard reached base on a walk, putting men on first and third (Caleb Hall, a pinch runner for Morris advanced to third on a passed ball during Manrin’s at bat). Euverard took second on a wild pitch and a Harford error on TJ Overman’s ball plated both Hall and Euverard to give Brunswick the 8-7 win.
The final game of the weekend saw Harford take a commanding 5-1 lead after the second inning, but the Dolphins would threaten once again, cutting the lead to two, with single runs in the third and sixth.
This time, the Dolphins saw its share of miscues in the seventh as Harbach reached base after being hit by pitch and with one out freshman Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) singled and advanced to second while Harbach took third on the throw. Freshman Mike Maxwell (Salem, N.J./Woodstown) added another Owl run with a sacrifice fly that scored Harbach and after Otstot reached third on a wild pitch, he scored on the catcher’s throwing error to give Harford the 7-3 lead.
Freshman Kyle Rooker (Coco Beach, Fla./Space Coast), who entered the game in the sixth for freshman starter Chris Peacher (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech), held the Dolphins scoreless and gave up just one hit on the way to the 7-3 Harford win. Rooker picked up his first save of the year, while Peacher evened his record at 1-1.
Harbach led Harford on the weekend, going 6-for-15 (.400) with six hits, including two doubles, three RBI and six runs scored, while Wlodarczyk batted in six runs over the weekend while batting .300 (3-for-10) with three runs scored, a double and a home run.
Peacher picked up the only win of the weekend as he gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out one in five innings, while Rooker earned the save after pitching two innings in relief and giving up one run on three hits.
Freshman Mike Rapazzo (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) led all Owl pitchers with six strikeouts, as he earned a no decision for game two on Saturday, going six innings and allowing just two runs on six hits.
Morris led Brunswick on the weekend with a .600 average (6-for-10) with three doubles, two RBI and one run scored while David Aldridge, who pitched against Rapazzo earned a no decision as well, striking out eight and giving up two runs (none earned) on four hits in seven innings of work.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Thursday when they travel to Cecil for their conference opener at 3:00 p.m. The game against Lackawanna, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. has been postponed to a date yet to be determined. The game against Cecil was also originally scheduled to be played at Harford, but has been moved due to ongoing field improvements.
